I know from prowling the gear forum and the sale forum, there are a lot of people on this site that have as much gear as many of the BW outfitters. I can't pass up a bargain basement deal on decent equipment from yard sales or demo model closeouts at major brands.
After 40 years of camping, backpacking and now BW canoeing, I need to get rid of some of this stuff, but I have come to the realization, I am a camping gear "Hoarder".
How many gear hoarders are out there?
3 canoes presently (have sold 3 over the years) 8 paddles 9 sleeping bags 6 air-type mattresses 2 closed-cell mattresses 3 egg-crate mattresses 7 stoves only 2 water filters 4 cook sets 10 backpacks 2 hammocks 5 tents 3 Silva Ranger compasses 1 GPS Maps and more maps 4 headlamps ??? flashlights 4 first aid kits 3 tyvek tarps various sizes 2 real tarps 8 pr boots tons of outer and under wear
my justification is that we have 4 grown children who camp and borrow my gear. We also go on an annual trek in the winter with friends, nieces, nephews, etc. Many of the newbies have no gear, hence, the outfitter status.
Not sure if these count: 1 bass boat w/ associated gear 1 5th wheel camper trailer w/ associated gear

Other Gear, 18 ft duckboat with 50 hp yamaha 5th wheel camper 34' Jayco 35+ rods and reels 6 big boxes of fishing gear along withmany smaller boxes as well outdoor clothes of many kinds hiking boots, canoeing shoes
Oh and before I forget my other hobbie... cycling Klein Quantum Pro Trek Sport 370 Specialized Ruby Pro (wife's $5500 bike) two stationary trainers shoes, hot weather riding clothes, cold weather riding clothes misc gear too much to count!
I believe I am officially hobby gear poor...
What do I need next? ;-)
And what makes it funny is that it is basically just the wife and I, although a couple of the kids might go paddling on local streams once or twice a year.

Me too. I can hardly pass up a yard/estate sale with 'gear/tool goodies' in it. If I see something cool on super clearance I usually grab it. It has been said that I'd buy a horse turd at a dime on the dollar.

One of the backpacks I bought at a yard sale had been to China and back before I came across it at $5. And I don't mean just because it was made there.

Can't even go into the motor boats, sailboat, snowshoes, skis, etc. and who knows what ancient stuff is in the garage that just cannot be parted with whenever it's considered. Says something (strange) when you just like LOOKING at something that's intended for outdoor fun.

My trouble is that I have too many hobbies. Yes I have four canoes, also a duck boat and a fishing boat, 4 pairs of snowshoes, 7 or 8 fly rods (not counting the antique split-cane beauties), dozens of spinning rods, 3 sets of golf clubs, multiple chain saws, logging tools, antiques, the list goes on and on.
We won't even talk about my other hobbies.
I want to take up sailing but my wife doesn't think it's a good idea.

I finished my annual cleanup of my outdoor gear. This year I tried something new. I took everything out of my storage bins and spread it out so I could pack like stuff together. Between fishing and camping it is obscene how.much crap I have. Case in point - I found a portable fishfinder I bought 4 years ago and forgot I had it. Stayed using my old Eagle, which works just fine so why did I buy the other one??? Still, I cannot wait for the next REI sale.
oh boy...I forgot a few things... 2 self inflating sleep pads 1 electric Coleman lantern 3 headlamps 5 other flashlights a second rain shell in a slightly smaller size 2 poly tarps 2-3 palstic ponchos (yeah...that's a Sears poncho) USArmy poncho liner 2 cast iron Dutch ovens 1 cast iron fry pan 8" 1 cast iron griddle
Virtually ALL of this equipment(except the Svea 123) was obtained AFTER 1999, the year I lost all my old gear in a basement flood
Crap, now I'm going to have to pull everything out and reorganize it all... Who started this thread anyway?!?!?!

Lets see...0 canoes :( sold mine a couple years back. I am storing the brother-in-laws. ( I am looking for a steal on a lightweight canoe...wink,wink) 5 packs, 6-7 stoves 15 lanterns, that's a collection dating back to 1929. 6 paddles, probably 10 sleeping bags, but I have 5 kids so that's not too many. 3-4 cook kits, 5 headlamps, more flashlights than I can count, 3 tents.....It always seemed like a lot of stuff til I started reading other lists. I also use the excuse that I am gathering numbers for when my kids all want to go camping. So far only one has fallen in love with the bwca.
without the bad times: the good times wouldn't seem so good
quote wetcanoedog: "a couple photos are worth a heap of words.. " ummm yeah, esp the lanterns!
I don't really have an excuse, but I do love it when I can help outfit someone to come along or try something on their own. That's what the gear's for...

If I had the $$$, I'd probably have 10 different ways to sleep! I've already got a 2man tent, a bivy tent, a hammock w/bug net, a REALLY big mosquito net (4'x8' I think) and 2 tarps ... oh yeah, and 2 more tents ..... yup. Maybe it's a good thing I'm broke most of the time :)
