Browsing through threads and campsite reviews it seems that a there is a couple of mentions alluding to jumping off the big Cherry lake cliffs.

I clearly remember paddling beneath the cliffs near the portage to Lunar lake. Even more striking then the remarkable sheer height is the realization that they seem to continue straight down into the water. Looking up at these cliffs that must be 100+ ft, I thought to myself "nah, no sane person would ever attempt such a jump". The mere thought of it gave me the ebee jeebees.

Has anyone heard of these being jumped? Please, say it ain't so!

I have never seen anyone jump but my 2 trips to Cherry have been in the Fall and it would be pretty cold to swim :-)
Here is a photo to remind everyone what those cliffs look like.

A jump off of those cliffs might very well be natural selection at work.

Gotta find a way up before you can jump. Looks to be quite a climb.

The climb isn't to bad to the top. I couldn't imagine taking the elevator down though.

I'd imagine the jump is preceded by, "Hey y'all watch this..."

Wow! Good find. It looks like the jumper isn't even at the highest cliffs but that was a long way down. The slap I heard at the end probably resulted in bruises or a cracked rib.

Cliff jumping is so foolish....accidents do happen and then you're screwed..
Nobody jumps on my trips.
Common sense

we use to cliff jump in taylors falls every year. I jumped from much lower heights, but still hurt myself pretty good when I landed a little wrong. My tailbone and underside was pretty sore for about 2 weeks.

I would bet his backside was sore the rest of the trip.

I think the most recent death was in 2013 on Makwa Lake. Those are some big cliffs, and the guy never surfaced after hitting the water.

Oh my gosh that made me shiver. I sure hope that idiot was ok. Sounds like his friends at least were concerned and ready to help him.

BTW thanks for posting the picture of Cherry Lake. I've been obsessed planning routes into and out of it all day.

Ouch. We did allow some low jumps on a trip with some of our nephews. The decision involved their father, my wife, and myself. However, fear of this scenario is why we only allowed standing jumps. No running was permitted.

My wife is a C N A and E M T and worked with a guy that was paralyzed jumping off a dock and diving into a lake he had never been to before. The rocks were a foot below the surface. I think of the stupid stuff I did when I was young like jumping off a moving train into the trees near the tracks and other similar stupid stuff and im very thankful I made it through that without killing myself. p.s. I dont even drink so I had no excuse for my stupidity other than thrill seeking.

Lost one of my best friends that way. trying to show his friends the diving tricks he picked up over his freshmen year (college) from the divers (was on the swim team) one hot summer night at a buddies cabin-- off the dock. Broken neck- paralyzed-- drowned.

You should plan on heading from Cherry to Lunar in that direction. Let's say it's a memorable portage.

In August we caught Lakers in fairly shallow water on both Lunar and Lake of the Clouds. Beautiful colors on the Lakers in Lake of the Clouds.

Comparing the colorations of the cliffs in the video vs. the picture, I would say he jumped right off the highest part of that big cliff. Insane!

Long time ago I was a lifeguard at Interstate SP and there was a guy/gal couple that would do synchronized jumps off the cliffs into the St. Croix. Totally illegal, but hard to monitor the beach and the cliffs at the same time so as soon as I'd yell at them and head back to the beach area they'd be right back at it. Long story short, he ended up dead and she'll never walk again. The cliffs at Taylors Falls are every bit as high as those at Cherry Lake and every bit as dangerous...yet youth knows no bounds apparently..
