Here, or on some other board, the story was told of how that ribbon rock came to be at Dorothy Molter's old place. Someone with better search skills than I might be able to find it. My foggy memory is that she saw it in the water somewhere and some of her relatives took out a rowboat to get it for her. When they put the rock in the boat it opened a hole in the boat so they had to constantly bail out water to get it back to her island. I recall it being a great story.

The photos posted earlier by cowdoc is banded iron formation, also know as "bacon rock". Dorothy Molter had a bolder at her entry point on her island on Knife Lake.

I like that - where was it taken?"
It's the portage between Insula and Hudson. Here's a shot taken from the same spot looking in the opposite direction.

cool, where in Quetico?"
Gutmon,
How'd you know it was in Quetico??
Good guess that picture was taken on the north end of McIntyre on an unseasonably cold windy day, and it made a great wind break."
Jman- you strike me as an ethical tripper and I noticed there was no fire grate...

My nephew and I were unloading the canoe at a boat ramp following a river float trip here in MS when I looked across the river and spotted this rubble at the foot of the bridge piling. He looked for all the world like Old Chief Chickasawhay watching over his stream.

Found in a creek on Insula during low water conditions. I'm almost positive this was used as a knife or some other weapon tip many years ago. The notches were definitely cut into it. I would love to donate it to a museum around Ely or find someone who knows to take a look at it.
And please spare me the "you aren't allowed to remove artifacts" stuff. It's a cool rock and I kept it.

“I have found that people go to the wilderness for many things, but the most important of these is perspective. They may think they go for the fishing or the scenery or companionship but, in reality, it is something far deeper. They go to the wilderness for the good of their souls” Sigurd Olson

Joy is a great teacher, but so is dispair. Wonder is a great teacher, but so is confusion. Hope is a great teacher, but so is disillusionment. And life is a great teacher, but so is death. To deny yourself any of those in any aspect is not experiencing life totally.

quote Arlo Pankook: "
I assume this coloration was from copper, does anyone know?"
Yes, good chance that the green is copper oxide / carbonate - malachite.

After taking a two week trip out west when I was 17, I returned and at that time, took my film to be developed and when I got it back I realized, all I have is a bunch of pictures of rocks. Last year was my friends first real trip away from home and he started the trip by taking pictures of every single rock he could. I told him of my experience with rocks and photography, and unless the rock is absolutely spectacular (and I know every rock is) than please at least take a picture of one of us along with the rocks, otherwise all you are going to come home with is a bunch of pictures of rocks. And when you try and show others how great your trip was, they might respond, wow a bunch of rocks :). Btw I love rocks, I just like my friends more.

The pictures below are of a rock formation Kevin Callan refers to as; "Andy Baxter's Egg Shape Rock", in his "Quetico and Beyond" Guide Book.
The rock formation is located in Heron Bay, (Sturgeon Lake, Quetico Provincial Park). I realized later though, I could have had better shots or angles of this rock formation.

Although there are numerous, scenic sandstone cliffs along the first 20-miles of the Kickapoo River, there's some impressive sandstone palisades several miles downstream from the small hamlet of Rockton, Wisconsin.
