Hi all,

I bought a used canoe in the off season that is registered in Iowa. Where do I need to go to register this in MN? Can I do at a local DMV? Or do I have to go to the office on Lafayette in St. Paul? Wasn’t clear on the site.

Thanks in advance!

Brennan

Local DMV locations can handle that for you

Not all DMV deputy registrars do this. You can check here:

The Roseville DMV is a good place to go. I just did an Iowa boat there this winter. Did you get the Iowa registration paperwork from the seller?

I just went to the DNR License Center @ 500 Lafayette Road in St Paul and I was the only person there. Was in and out in 10 minutes. Highly recommend if it's not too far of a drive for you. Way better than the local DMV :)

I have bought a few canoes and licensed them at my local DMV. You will need a bill of sale along with the old registration# to transfer the title.

Nope. There's a form on the DNR website you can fill out yourself.
Requires nothing more than your info (name, address etc.) and previous owners info, as well as boat description. Nothing about past registration.

I have used never needed a bill of sale for a canoe. You might for a power boat etc...

Well I needed a bill of sale. When I purchased my canoe through Piragis that was there instructions when they handed the receipt/ bill of sale to me. Went to DMV provided the receipt/bill of sale she asked for the registration# off the canoe which I took a picture of before I went, she ran my card took my hard earned money and sent me on my way with tabs. I'm not saying this is the way it's done everywhere but I have transfered 4 canoes this way. Sounds like the online version is a way better way.
