I know of the book called "canoe country flora: plants and trees of the north woods and boundary waters" by mark stensaas. I have read that book and loved it. However, I found the drawn pictures to be less helpful than actual photos would have been. I am not a botanist, and do not have any educational background in this field.
I am wondering if anyone knows of a printed resource I could take with me to the BWCA to identify and learn about plants while I am actually seeing them.
I love that book! So well written. Fortunately, I am already familiar with most of those plants. I recommend picking a couple plants you want to learn before each trip and look up identifying photos on the iNaturalist website. Then work on finding those plants on your trip. By focusing on just a few new plants each time, you will strengthen your knowledge.
I also recommend Wild Berries & Fruits of Minnesota, Wisconsin, & Michigan as a field guide book to bring along. Not everything in there will show up in the BWCA, but there is a lot.
Have fun! Plants are one of my favorite things to learn and find on trips.
