Trip Introduction:
This was my first ever overnight trip into the BWCA. I was accompanied by my wife Claire, and brother in law Scott. Scott had gone on his first trip with some friends the previous year, and my wife went with some friends in college in 2005. We think this route is basically the route my wife took when she went. This time however, she was 4 months pregnant with our first child.
Day 1 of 7
Saturday, August 23, 2014

I was up until 3:45 am packing. I knew it would take me awhile but I never guessed I would be up so late. I’m not even sure what I was doing the whole time but I still wasn’t done when I went to bed. I knew we would be leaving later than the 6 am we had planned. Around 2 am I was cutting the new rope I had bought. As I was making my very last cut (out of roughly 12 cuts), I had my finger a little too close and snipped a good 1/8” into the inside of my finger just above my big knuckle. I knew it was gonna hurt. I debated about going to get stitches but I knew that would delay our leaving quite a bit, so I put a band aid on and kept packing. I finally called it quits at 3:45. I laid in bed wide awake not able to sleep and pondered getting up to finish packing. I ended up falling asleep around 4 or a little after.
