As a kid I remember the old Hamms' beer commercial and their slogan of a beer from "the land of sky-blue waters." They always showed a waterfall. I heard that the waterfall and subsequent photos were taken in the BWCAW. Any truth to this? If so, where was it?

yes as a matter of fact i camped out on the campsite facing that area, its up on the canadain border, in just west of lower basswood falls, we went up through ep23, the area is busy but you can see the lone island and the water around it and take a fairly decent picture of it from the campsite just southwest of the waterfalls

I have always heard that those commercials were filmed in several places in northern MN including Voyageurs Nat'l Park, some in the BWCA, and even some on Burntside. Great Outdoors may have more info.

No, they look quite a bit like the falls from the commercial but these are along the Kawishiwi River, just west of the Lake One EP.

I sure wish I could find one of those Hamms old bar signs that had the picture and the movement to it.

" How did they get the Giant Hamm's sign in the middle of the lake ? " It's a giant fishing lure being lowered into a secret fishing spot by a UFO. 6 LB Maganathin attached so we can't see it. Izzy

jdevries,

You can probably find one on Ebay, but unless you are rich they are very spendy...I got a clock with a water scene that changed from sunrise to sunset from my uncle who worked for a beer distributor when I was a kid,
But, it quit revolving, so like a kid, I took it apart and that was the end of that... They now go for 3-4 hundred on Ebay...

My grandparents had one like that in their bar when I was a kid. It's called a Scene-o-rama and it's what I want in my bar. Very expensive though. There is alot of them out there since Hamm's was nationwide, but they hold their value quite well.

Snakecharmer maybe right...

I love the internet HA

At least some of the early Hamm's Beer commericals were filmed at or around the Arcadia Lodge on Turtle Lake in Itaska Co. according to internet search.... filming locations for Hamm's Beer commericals

Also Al Capone loved to stay at this particular resort....

I might have to check this resort out sometime, sounds like good fishing too.

The early Hamms ads used as a backdrop an island in front of Burntside Lodge. It looks just like the picture on Woodpecker's tray. The island is now referred to as "Hamms Island."

Those Hamms commercials were from back in the 60's, and I have heard (unsubstantiated source) that major stockholders owned a place on Burntside Lake. Hence, the Burntside connection.

Here we go-Hamms clarification

The Hamms pictures in the late 50's and early 60's were taken on Burntside Lake. These were the TV comercial ones.

The photographer was Les Blacklock. He stayed at Water's Island several times while taking the pics.

Most of the pictures were of various parts of Water's Island (Gregory Island originally) Some of the rapids may have been taken at Crab Creek.

Call Dan Waters at 365-3202.

Blacklock stayed at their place on Burntside when he did the photo shoots.

As stated earlier, these were the late 50's and early 60's photos.

Got the info from a man that knew him, and was there when he shot the pictures.

Where did you get anything different?? Please clarify.

Back to the top for Sky Blue Waters

Pinecone...

apparently there are several old jingles for Hamm's

"resfreshing as the land of sky-blue waters..land of lakes and pine, cool enchanment....Hamm's the Beer Refreshing, Hamm's"

"From the land of sky-blue waters...comes the water best for brewing ....hints of lakes and sunset breezes. dnace and sparkle with each glassfull.....Hamm's the Beer refreshing,,,Hamm's....."

I've got a dvd of old Hamm's commercials and tried to pick some of the words to the jingles

The one I always heard as a kid was " From the Land of Sky Blue Waters - Comes a beer refreshing - Hamm 's the beer refreshing - Hamm's. And then Paul Hornung, Jim Taylor scored touchdowns. Bart Starr threw a touchdown pass to Bowd Dowler of Max McGee. And Ray Nitcske ripped off someones head. Every Sunday with my Dad. Izzy

Curiosity as to the backdrop photo shoot locations prompted me to email the folks at the HammsClub.com. The reply I received included a challenge. I'm not sure what award, if any, might be bestowed on the winner. But my hunch is, you'd better like Hamms beer. Here's the reply:

THE ANSWER IS PRIMARILY NORTHERN MINNESOTA. LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF LOCATIONS WERE SHOT. MANY DIFFERENT ONES WERE USED. WE HAVE A CHALLENGE OUT TO ANYONE WHO CAN MATCH UP A HAMM'S AD PIECE WITH A CONTEMPORARY PHOTO OF THE LOCATION.

It's in the keg.

Then I found this with a bunch of Hamms commercials. If you want a good laugh, watch the "Best Beer Commercial ever." Too funny! (You have to watch the first video to see the other choices.)

When Blacklock was shooting the pics on Burntside, he took many shots from many angles of different places.

This, I assume, is where they get the figure that hundreds of locations were being used.

There is a bar by me that has 16 oz cans of Hamms. I was inspired to try one. Poured it into a shorty glass to give it the proper respect. Tastes like liquid aluminum. Not sure if I could do more than two of those. Need a Schlitz chaser. The signs have always been prized. Who could drink that beer is a mystery to me.

Recall these Hamm's beer commercials, from back when I was a young man in the late 50's. I must admit that I used to drink the stuff, but wouldn't any longer. We were told that some of the pics were taken on Saganaga Lake. The old jingle used to go " from the land of pines and lofty balsams, comes the beer refreshing, Hamm's the beer refreshing", with a drum beat in the background.

I second the trip to the Chik Wauk Museum, at the end of the Gunflint Trail, near Sag Lake. It is well worthwhile and the hiking trails provide some very scenic views and good exercise.

"Who could drink that beer is a mystery to me."

Well, the mystery is solved! I'm that guy! Left half a case at my buddy's cabin a few weeks back and his wife called and said if I didn't come and get it she was going to package it up and send it back to me UPS. LOL!!! On the way honey, on the way! Mmm! I like my beer somewhere between that "Lite" water all the college kids drink and that sludge "craft" beer that should come with a fork. YUCK

Anyway, they keep selling a 30 pack for under $13 and I'll keep right on drinking that so-called bear pizz.

Still have my Schmidts beer cans with the nature scenes on them. I have a musky one that was always coveted, well, back when, like forty plus years ago. Still looks cool. Not as cool as a Hamms sign with the water flowing. Old Style had signs like that too. We were Old Style guys. Tastes like sour moose urine to me now. But was very tasty back in the day...
Should have tried a Schmidts when I was in town last week. Jim Beam said hi first.

I have loved the Hamm's motion signs since I was a kid. I would stare at the photos of the canoes on the beautiful lakes and imagine I was there.
I have four Hamm's signs including the scene-o-rama, Starry Nights, the small moving scene with the clock and the big double wide waterfall.
My Starry nights needs a little work. I found a guy online who has a case of spare motors and has other replacement parts.
I'm going to go down to my bar right now and have a beer and start planning next years trip to the Boundary Waters. Thinking about ordering a new CCS tarp.

Voyaguer Brewing in Grand Marais has the canoe used in one of the commericals hanging on the wall. We recently took the brewery tour. Before I could ask about the cool old canoe on the wall, owner Mike Prom pointed it out and said it was the one used in Hamm's commercials. It might have been my favorite part of the tour. Well the free beer is nice too ;-)

That's where I (re)discovered it. Thanks John!

LMAO!"

"
I happen to be friends with the premier Hamms sign refinisher in the world (I might not be exaggerating). Lives about 40 miles from my house. I could connect you with him."

I would appreciate that - he might have a source for some replacement parts I need.

Had one of those Hamms in my garage for awhile. I still have about 300 cans in my attic that I've had for more than forty years. Not sure how many Hamms are up there. Since it was mentioned, here's my Schmidts nature can collection. Looks like I got doubles of the pheasant. Should have traded up!

Sorry about this being off subject - but I made a donation to this site a few days ago and I don't see the little Flying Moose symbol under my name on these posts. Before anyone asks - no I did not check the anonymous box.
I do see the charge on my credit card . . I also see the charge for my new CCS tarp.
Does the little Flying Moose symbol take more than a few days to appear ?

Aw, what the heck, the cans are just sitting in boxes in my attic. I think this is my whole Hamms collection, plus the dented one, but that doesn't count. I have like eight boxes of cans divided up by region. Must have been organized back in the day. Have a lot of nice old PBR cans. I just threw in a couple other favs. Anyone who collected cans back in the day had one or two Olde Frothingslosh. And the Iron City 75 Steelers Super Bowl can is flat out cool. Always wore number 58.
I think I got most of these Hamms cans collecting on my bike on the other side of the tracks. My dad used to go on road trips and bring me back cans. I can see him now putting down a sixer of Lone Star in his hotel room to help his son better his collection. He tells a story of having like twenty cans on the hotel room table to bring home and the maid came and cleaned them out when be went to breakfast. Oh man, I got robbed of doubles of the Olympia with the curved top!

I like the Preferred Stock can too. I remember me and my best buddy used to splurge and split three sixers of Old Style Special Export thinking it was an upgrade. Pure swill. Speaking of, I have to share the words on a can of Olde Frothingslosh. It's just too funny.

Pittsburgh Brewing Company

Fatima Yechburg, winner of the 1969 Miss Olde Frothingslosh contest was chosen on the basis of beauty, talent, poise . . . and quantity. She is the woman who best symbolizes Olde Frothingslosh. The pale stale ale with the foam on the bottom. Now she's the girl all others look down on.

Background - She's from a small town outside Pittsburgh. It's considerably smaller since she left.
Occupation - Trapeze artist
Education - Studying arc welding at night
Hobbies - Arm wrestling, sky diving, soap carving, ballet and reading. She reads comic books, race forms, cereal boxes and other good stuff.
Miss Frothingslosh's secret to success.

For your viewing pleasure... 1955 Rippler sign as I remember. It was supposed to look like a TV set hanging on the wall. The waves still work.
