My old computer was a Dell Windows based with XP on it. Just upgraded to a new comptuer with Windows 10. I tried loading in my Garmin US Topo 24K and all I get is a warning, "Action denied when map Source tried to read from the registry. Consult the system administrator and start Mapsource again." I tried installing it again from my CD program, and that is the best that I get. Any thoughts?
I googled the problem, but got nowhere. My device is an Etrex Legend HCx. Thanks.

Not 100% sure but think the Garmin maps are locked to the specific unit. I can only use Garmin Topo100K when my GPS 62st is connected to the computer (WIN7 Pro), disconnect and Topo100K is not displayed in the Maps list.

If you are trying from a disk, and the computer asks for administrator permission, you need to be logged into the computer as an administrator, not all users have those privileges. You may need to change your account type. The process is the same in Win10.

I think I may be screwed. I checked my settings, and I'm already signed in as the administrator. I also read on-line that Garmin only allows their software to be loaded onto one computer, so if you get a new computer, you have to buy another CD or download the software on-line. Further, they don't offer US Topo 24K National Parks, Central any more, although they do have one for the BWCA. And even further, their current and similar software is apparently not compatible with an Etrex Legend HCx, according to their device compatibility list.
So, it seems that I have an older device with no means of setting up routes on my computer and uploading them to the device.
I believe there are other mapsets out there that would work OK for this purpose.
Any thoughts about a different mapset? If I can get one, how do I upload a route to the new map set, since my Garmin Trip and Waypoint software is also a boat anchor now.
On a brighter note, this Redpine product and system looks like it could work: PaddleNav Seems like I should be able to get all that I need, and a means to upload routes with this product for only about $55.
I'm not a real GPS nut, but they do come in handy to figure out where you are. It was very useful this year on my first day of my trip starting on Poplar Lake, as the lake was totally fogged in. Had I not had a GPS with me, I would have had to wait for the fog to burn off.

Try BaseCamp instead of MapSource. Garmin is still maintaining BaseCamp while they stopped developing the other product a couple years ago.

Talk to Garmin about the files needed to prove ownership that are (hopefully) still hiding somewhere on your drive that will allow MapSource to load the topo CDs. Perhaps they just need to be in a different (expected) directory. I'm a Mac guy and have never run into a problem after an upgrade, but that's with BaseCamp and my lifetime maps, direct connect of 62st, etc. So, we may be talking apples and oranges in more ways than one... Good luck.
