If I were to get a tow from Saganaga lake to Hook Island would it be reasonable to think I could make to McEwen in one day? I would like to get into this area and fish but I only have 4-5 days in Sept. Also what should I expect for scenery in the Wet,McEwen lake area. Also hows the fishing.
Hook Island to McEwen could be done in a day but it would be a long haul.We only made it as far as the last campsite before you go into Wet lake going in but coming out we made it the whole way.We were the first group at the ranger station in the morning but it took up alot of time going in.
Scenery is awesome with all the falls(use caution, people have died at every falls along the chain.)Once you get up to Saganagon, you'll notice the fire of 95.It burnt alot, north of the river. We saw moose along the river.
As for McEwen, the fishing was great when we were there in June 04, lakers, northerns and a ton of big smallies.McEwen has 2 5-star campsites, one is on the biggest island in the southern part of the lake and the other on is on the eastern point right where the lake narrows and heads south. You can check out some pics at http://community.webshots.com/user/kevheads
E-mail me and I'll give you a few good fishing spots.

MY father and i have done hook i to mcewen twice in the last 3 years . the fishing is some of the best i have ever had but we always go in early june.we made it to mcewen in abuot 7 hours from the ranger station. single portage and dont stop to fish.
that being said you might want to stop at the second falls after you enter the maligne river for lunch I caught a 22 inch smallmouth right under the falls in 03.took a couple pics and released her so please return the favor if you have any luck there.
fishing is unbeleivable when the bass are spawning in mcewen, we got bored of catching 18 inch smallmouth and went after lake trout.
when the lake is flat (usually in the morning or evening)padel out and have a little cleo or other shiny spoon that you can cast along distance ready .look for trout rings in the water, sometimes you will even see a fin break the surface. head strate for them and cast when your in range. you can also jig or troll for them but it much easier to catch fish when there feeding.
we also caught a lot of northerns but didnt have any luck on walleyes.
good luck let me know if you have any other questions i might be able to answer. I tried to get falls chain entry point this year but was to late so we are heading for Knife lake this june.
sameday june 11. we will probably just base camp in the area and do alot of day trips. I would like to give you some fishing tips for this area but this is the 1st time we've been to this part of the park.
I have read that carp is a very good smallmouth lake . lets hope for good weather that week.
