I just reserved a permit for Lake One traveling east. Wanted to check with anyone that has been up in that area for hanging. Not sure if this is part of the wind/fire damage.

Went through there last year. For the most part, the southern side of lakes 1-4 are burned without good hanging opportunities while the northern shores are spared.
Hudson is totally burned, as is the southern half of Insula south of the rock. Insula North of the rock and east to Alice is not burned, and you can get there in a long day.

The first site just as you enter Lake Three on the western shore has a great hanging spot. In general you should have no problems but remember it is a busy area and best sites tend to get taken so do not travel late and hope to find a suitable site.

Enter early and paddle hard! Alice is a hard day's paddle and worth the effort.

Read up on the fire and the Ranger entrapments that happened on lake Insula. The burn area is recovering, but is a little depressing as it is not at all like the pretty forest you're expecting. But, It is really cool to actually go and see where people deployed emergency shelters to let the fire blow over. It makes the story very real.

Thanks for that link, muddyfeet. My nephew and I were camped at the island site on the north edge of Insula on 9/12/2011. We watched the planes but had no idea of the drama going on just south of us. Watching the trees burn was enough and the waves on the lake were intimidating. Smoke was intense and we wet bandanas to help breathe.
