So I made my first hammock and I have to say that I'm quite pleased with it. I learned how to use a rolled hem foot on the sewing machine and it made for a quite nice hem for the sides. I also made the whoopie slings and continuous loops for the suspension. All told, including the stuff sack it weights 17.75 oz. Here are some pics. Now I need to think about a tarp and possible bug netting...

What kind of cord is that for the suspension? It looks great btw.

Looks good! Diy gear is the best. Customize it exactly how you want it.
Lookup the 'knotty mod' on hammockforums: I like building this into my hammocks. Tarps are easier to make than hammocks. You can't go wrong with a 'fronkey style' bugnet.

Careful, once you know how to use the 'thread injection machine' you'll soon be making all sorts of gear! Splicing rope is a good skill to have, too.

Thanks. The cord is 7/64th Amsteel made into whoopie slings.

you can find bug cocoons on the net for your hammock, this is what I use for mine. Which is nice, because in the spring or in the fall when there isn't any skeeters, you don't have to use it (less weight - less space utilized)

Well I made a tarp. It turned out quite nice actually, that is other than the color... I didn't expect the yellow I ordered to be neon so I might have to make another one that doesn't require sun glasses! The total package (tarp, stakes and rope) weighs in at 1 lb 13 oz.

Nice job!
Can't miss that color! - what material and from where did you get it? I've found that it's hard to accurately judge color of these things when ordering on a computer screen.

Looks like lots of tieouts for a really versatile piece of equipment.

Sweeet set up! You can always use the yellow tarp during hunting season!

Yeah the color screams "don't shoot me." I don't hunt so perhaps I could sell it to someone that does and make another. I bought the material here (as 2nds) and it's 1.1 oz SilNylon. For the life of me I don't know why I don't get the darker yellow. I'm making one for a friend (he's making me a 7* bent shaft cherry/walnut paddle) and he got the darker yellow and it's what I had been planning. I think I did the order late at night. Oh well, it works!

I'm looking forward to using my setup on my upcoming Memorial Day BWCA trip! After Mocha's bug report I'm glad that I decided to do a bug net. It zips off on both end's so I can have it on or off. I also made some snake skins so that I can be a little less jarring to the eyes when the weather is nice.
