Unfortunately, driving in is not an option for us. Is Minneapolis the closest airport?

Does anyone have any experience with ground transportation options from there up to Grand Marias? ...hate to rent a car and have it set at the trailhead...

Thanks~

You can fly into Duluth.
Outfitters can and will pick you up there and provide ground transport for a price.
You can also get rental cars in Duluth.

You can rent a car or see about a bus. It is a little far from Minneapolis and Duluth to do anything else more personal like cab or hired van.

Check with your outfitter-they may have options to get to Ely from Duluth.

Another option is post to the different BWCA boards and see if anyone will be heading up from or through Minneapolis or Duluth to Grand Marais the day you arrive. You may be able to get a ride from a fellow canoeist. Might be worth asking. The return trip could be tricky unless your trips absolutely coincide.

Good Luck-you will find a way.
