Novice here... I'm looking to get into some GPS action myself and I found an app Deepdish
Says 14.99 but I think its 10 when you get to the App Store. Not many reviews to go by but maybe worth a shot

I've used a solar charger to keep my electronics charged, takes some work keeping it in the full sunshine all day but it worked great for me Orange joos
Check compatibility as I used it on iphone 4

I use a GoalZero Nomad 7 (7w) solar charger with their #10 battery pack which has 4 AA rechargeables that are 2300 mAh. I leave this on shore in the sunlight and it usually charges in 3-4 hours. I then have another USB 8400 mAh pack that I top off I. The afternoon. The Goal Zero will charge my iPhone5 2-3 times and the USB pack will charge it 4+ times. I carry the USB with me to keep the phone > 50% charged at all times. I use the GoalZero to charge the phone overnight. If it's cloudy I can use the BioLite stove to charge a battery pack but that takes 3 hours of fire tending with small sticks. I also have a Deeper fish/depth finder that has to be charged daily. As a back up I carry a PocketPower+ which will recharge the phone and Deeper 10-12 times each on one charge. Our longest trips are 16 days and have yet to run out of power. But you have got keep on it and not get complacent.
I also have the PaddleNav app which has all BWCA campsites and portages but not a very detailed map. I really like Gaia and recommend it.

A lot easier to mount a GPS unit to a thwart than a phone :)

I have the iPhone in a Lifeproof (waterproof tested!) case in a pocket case that I wear on a lanyard around my neck and stowed in the breast pocket of my jacket. I also tried a RAM mount the mounts to thwart which works ok with your not needing to interact with the screen. BTW the Deeper is Bluetooth to the phone which is what I'm using most of the time with the depth chart superimposed. We also carry Fisher and Mckenzie maps. GPS is only a luxury, but the fish finder is a must! We're there to fish...

That's where I want to be, a dedicated device seems better

Kind of an answer to the question you posted earlier. Red Pine Paddle Nav, if you purchase the chip, it is a drop in use it solution. Looking for GPS opinions? Start with Garmin series, ETrex/Dakota 20/30, Oregon/Montana 600s, GPS 62st and newer. Look for external memory chip (microSD), compatibility. GPS really becomes useful with a computer mapping program. You can literally carry a library of maps on the units!
