Can you use a small folding (fits in kayak) 2-wheeled "dolly" for portaging? Also, any additional tips for kayaking? 2 first timers with 2 kayaks. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Love the site.

Mechanical portaging is not allowed. Copied below is information taken right from the BWCAW web site:

PORTAGE WHEELES
Mechanical assistance is only permitted over the following: International Boundary, Four-Mile Portage, Fall-Newton-Pipestone and Back Bay Portages into Basswood Lake, Prairie Portage, Vermilion-Trout Lake Portage.

So unless you are only using thos eportages do not use any type of portage wheels.

I have seen kayakers who had clamp on portage yolks they stored until needed and then clamped on to carry the kayak.

I have also seen pairs of kayakers carrying them by grab handles front and back and carried across that way.

There was also one kayaker who had a pad he put on top of his head that allowed his eyes to be able to see far enough in front of him. He carried it on his head with the pad adding the clearance and comfort and walked across that way.

The portage issues is one reason you do not see too many kayaks in the BWCAW. Packing and unpacking gear at portages and carrying Kayaks across portages are difficult with kayaks.

If you don't mind renting there is a Minnesota company that makes portagable kayaks. Check them out at www.vetterkayaks.com. I've used them on one of my trips, and they work pretty well. They's work well for any solo trip.
