Has anyone done this trip up the pine and granite river from gunflint lake to saganaga. if so what was it like and how many of the numerous rapids can be realistically ran or pull a canoe through.
We did a quick trip from Gunflint Lake down the Granite River to Larch Lake and back in Sept. We didn't risk running or walking any of the rapids on this strech of the trip. The water was low and none appeared worth the dumping of bodies and equipment or kevlar repair. The portages where short, but tricky. It was raining and there was lots of granite to traverse as the name implies.
I would have like to continue down the Granite to Sag but schedules and interests did not make it possible. Decent fishing in Clove and Larch.
This is my absolute favorite trip! I was a canoe guide in the BWCA in the summer of 1990; quite a while ago. We did that trip three times. I have no idea what it is like now; with the blow-down. But I remember fondly how we paddled along the river. It was just a very interesting trip. We did go through the rapids. I swamped our canoe, because I leaned a little too far when trying to steer the boat. It was pretty embarrassing. I think we did portage at least one of the rapids. When you get to Saganaga, make sure you are handy with your compass! Anyway, this post is a year too late, but I would highly recommend this trip if you haven't done it already.
