Ely area, what time of year do you suggest. Would like to avoid the bugs as much as possible and still get some good fishinf in.

We have had the best luck avoiding bugs in the Fall, fishing is good then too. It can be a bit cool at that time though.

HMM - not wanting to be politically incorrect here - but the comment 'some from California' in conjunction with 'first timers' would make me think of sticking with the warmer parts of the season. One of the best trips I have taken was a peak season, July/August trip. Son and I ate fresh blueberries until --- well, ya'll know what too much fresh fruit does to the system. Anyway, I'd look more towards berry season than fishing season if I were taking a group from a warm climate on a first time trip.
