"Self-issuing permits are required for all visitors (both day-use and overnight) entering the BWCAW during the off season between October 1 and April 30. The self-issuing permit also is required for non-motorized day-use during the summer season or for any day-use into the BWCAW from Crane Lake to Little Vermillion. The self-issuing permit forms are available by mail, at any Superior National Forest office and at the main BWCAW entry points. No reservation is required, but you do need to fill out the permit and carry one copy with you during your trip."
After October 1st you no longer need a reservation. You do need to fill out a permit at the entry you are going in at and put it in the box at the entry. The boxes generally have plenty of permit blanks and a pencil to fill out the permit, but I have a supply in my vehicle that I picked up at the ranger station just in case. Once I did get to a entry box only to find no slips and I filled out a piece of paper I had in the car the best I could. I went in last weekend and found plenty of permit slips at the entry I used (Angelworm). Have fun and enjoy the quiet of October.
