I have been winter camping for the last four years thanks to some help from Dwayne at Empire now Snowtreker tents and Tom and others at the Warner Nature Center. My trips so far have been into Tin Can Mike Lake, Sawbill, Duncan and some state parks. I took my girls, 8 and 9, into Itasca last week for their first winter trip, which is great for a beginner trip: very nice groomed trails and wolves howling at night. I am taking my 10 year old boy, friend and father on next trip, so a 3 to 7 mile base camp trip depending on terrain is what we can handle. Love to find a dog sled pack trail or some type of packed trail for some part of the trip. Like to camp where we can fish, explore rivers, chance of wild life sighting near some open water maybe and variety of landscape. I am looking for any suggestions but this year hoping for a trip up along the Gunflint trail. Last year, we skied in 7 miles to Tin Can Mike and 15 minutes after setting up camp, two snow mobiliers came ripping down the lake. Should have seen the look on my boys face after all the hard work to get in! Any suggestions appreciated k.lauber@comcast.net
