I went to Agnes back in 1994 but structure has not changed. We fished hard on that lake during the spring. The water temp was cold and we actually saw Lake Trout several times in the shallows. That year the ice went off right before the opening day. In fact when we went up Agnes we plowed through some ice that had caught between an island and shore, Ice breaker Eric & Steve. About half way up there are some cliffs on the East side I would troll those during mid day, we had a fish finder and it marked fish suspended over the bottom. You can also try vertical jigging but if you do not have a fish finder you will not know where they are. There is a large island, it had a a 12' Canadian DNR boat on it. Well from this island early morning we fished spoons and buck tails to catch fish.
Up the north end on the east bay where there is a creek to Dark lake. About half way between the creek and the bay entry there is a ridge/hump we caught walleye, small mouth and trout over this thing. towards the creek northern. Bounce a 1/2 ounce jig across until you find the structure and then work it. There is also a creek to Kawnaippi (sic) fish that early and late it seemed that the fish moved in there some. Not sure when you are going but hope this helps.
I am planning a trip back to Agnes spring next year so please let me know what you find. I am hoping to catch the trout shallow.
I went up to Agnes last year around the 15 may-2 jun and we just slammed the lakers. It was out first trip past the Basswood area so we really didn't know what to expect, we were just traveling, trolling countdown rapalas and some other stickbaits and all of a sudden I snagged into something, and at first glance I thought it was a pike. but we stayed about 40-75 ft of shore and and let about 100-150 ft of line out and just paddled at a decent speed and we were catching about 10-15 a day with a 3 person group. we caught some in the river inbetween agnes and kawnipi right in the middle of the day. we also caught some in the little lakes inbetween kawnipi and kashapiwi. usually the deeper we went the less we were catching them but the bigger they were. we really didnt catch andything other than lakers and 2 35plus inch pike.
Caught lots of great Lake Trout in August! Just threw jigs out soon after a rain, they were coming up to cool off, so we caught them pretty shallow. It's a nice lake with great Smallies too.
