I would like to get an idea of how far folks go when winter camping/traveling in the BWCA.

It has been my experience that setting up camp is more difficult in the winter than in the summer. Once it is setup, it is nice to leave it that way. I guess that means that one wouldn't get to travel as far. In the winter perhaps travel isn't needed as much. Especially if you are just trying to find a quiet spot in the woods or your own lake.

We generally set up a base camp with quinzees on the first day. That limits our mileage to 4-6 miles. Snow conditions and terrain can make that a really easy day or a long slog. From there we day trip and fish.

we generally travel one day (or fraction thereof) in and set up base camp. the nice thing about winter is that nobody else is out there -- you can have solitude just two or three lakes in from an EP.

Winter days are short so if we are pulling in a stove tent we usualy only go 4-6 miles on snowshoes or 5-8 miles if we are skiing lakes or fairly level ground. This gives us time to find a good tent site, set-up and find a good amount of firewood before the temps start to drop.(usualy like 3:30)

If snow is deep we might even limit ourselfs to 3-4 miles.

Unless you are realy light and on skis, think half the distance (or less) than a summer canoe trip.
