I have found nothing that is more rock-solid or easy to use (swivel adjustments for viewing and for swinging out of the way during portages) as a RAM mount, clamped to the thwart in front of me. Yes, there are some less bulky solutions, but I have found none more dependable.
On the canoe on the right in the above photo, you might be able to make out the RAM components I use for my Garmin 62st. You can do all of the same, but with a cradle that matches your particular model gps.
RAM Cradle Holder for the Garmin 62st RAM-HOL-GA41U:
RAM 2.43" x 1.31" Diamond Base with 1" Ball RAM-B-238U (mounted to the back of the cradle):
RAM Double Socket Arm for 1" Ball Bases RAM-B-201U
RAM Yoke Clamp Base with 1" Rubber Ball RAM-Mount RAM-B-121BU

Thanks for this post with the part numbers. It made it easy to order. I also included the large camera ball so it will double as a camera mount and allow video while paddling.

I have a little cover for my eTrex that allows it to clip onto a strap (e.g. chest strap on a pack). I put a velcro strap around my thigh and strap it to that for easy viewing while paddling. At a portage I will stick it in my pocket and let the strap fall down to my ankle. It's pretty low tech, but effective for me.

Nice to know that my OCD attention to details can sometimes be of help. :)
