Anyone else ever look at a Q map, find some remote, totally off-route lake, and it just started calling you? Some place you know that virtually no one goes?

Zephira has been that lake for me. Always wanted to try to get in there. Seems the only ways to do it is either a fairly long bushwhack from Cache lake, or to try to do a trip involving Tilly Creek (just outside the park) and Zephira creek, during high water.

But I thought I'd ask... anyone every been?

I dreamed about going to Zephira lake many times.
In fact, many years ago I wrote this poem about it...

There Sits Zephira.....A poem by Stumpy.......

There sits Zephira
what mysteries she must hold
she moves a bit, but doesn't leave
just sits there, growing old
She's sat there for millenia
and will for many more
with visitors so scarce to call
that few have seen her shore.

There sits Zephira
guarded by trees growing tall
she sits beyond our comfort zone
a mystery to us all
we glance upon her picture
and quickly look away
then dream about another route
a simpler, easy way.

There sits Zephira
shes perfect in my dreams
with everything a man desires
"come fish me", she just screams
a ranger once flew by her
and then he told to me
she could be deep with 4 foot pike
her waters look like tea

There sits Zephira
I dream of fish like hogs
with jumping bass, a walleye cache
and pike as big as logs
but why no trail to her?
a portage she wont lend
is she, not worth visiting
or just a route dead-end

There sits Zephira
are her shorelines grand?
are they smooth or boldered
or maybe they are sand
are they thick with Jackpine?
or swamps to thick to tramp
or do they hide some secrets
a long-gone trappers camp?

There sits Zephira
and decades just might pass
till fire sweeps around her
and turns her wood to grass
and we may never see her
a hard bushwack she'd make
but until then, to me always
she'll be the perfect lake.

Well I have to say, I was not expecting a poem in response! But well done!

I did a search on the site for Zephira, nothing came up. Weird.

Seems like a good lake for a meet up.

I have to say she looks good,
and I wonder what it'd take,
to organize a bushwhack,
to yon Zehpira lake.

I do believe I love her
and I think I saw her smile.
While I was glancing o're her way,
by the corner of my eye.

Her beauty is beholden,
by many a voyager.
Yet few will care to make a pass,
and try enter her.

Yet, would I want to share my love
with other eager men.
Or keep her to myself alone
and distant thereby win.

I do believe I've been thwarted!
Well done.

Not at all Stumpy. I had no intention of upstaging you. Rather, you inspired me beyond my ability to remain silent.
If you ever decide to put legs to your poem and want company I would love to be considered.

I am gathering that no one has ever been there. How about anyone know if there are fish in the lake or how deep it is or any other reason why there is no portage to it? It seems like a fairly large lake to go without any use.

Well, as stated in my poem...
"a ranger once flew by her
and then he told to me
she could be deep with 4 foot pike
her waters look like tea"

Bud Dickson (former Quetico ranger) flew over it and told me, it had dark tea colored water, and might be deep. He added..."I'll bet it's got 4 foot pike in it".
