To all of you who have the mambajamba tarp. Do you find it has enough coverage to use without the available door kits to keep the rain off and from under it?

The superfly comes with the door kits and goes for $130
the mambajamba is cheaper @ $110 but the door kits are $75

I'm a little partial to the mambajamba but am deliberating. Opinions please!

I have both. Let me first say that the construction of these tarps is top notch.

The MJ is a large tarp an offers a lot of coverage. I have used it in the rain for two days straight, unlike my SF, which I used in just some really nasty downpours.

Both served me well.

In any situation, the same goes for a tent, when weather is moving in or if you're base camping and the weather looks like it will take a turn, you have to pitch the tent or set up the hammock according to the prevailing winds to offer you the best protection. Part of staying dry means always keeping one eye to the skies.

But yes, the MJ tarp has great coverage. If you hang it high and keep the hammock body close to the ridgeline of the tarp, the sides will come down more than far enough to cover you in most any situation. Unless you feel you will be out in weather that would require you to close those doors up, the MJ should do just fine.

You may want to send Brandon an email and see if he has a “seconds” for sale on the Superfly. That is what I did for both my Blackbird & Superfly. Got them at a reduced price, only had to wait about a week to receive (think he only ships once a week), and I don’t care if the color is a little off.

I still have not seen it on the Superfly, and on the 1.7 DBL Blackbird it’s only noticeable from the inside about 2” long.

Thanks guys - I'd like to forego the doors if I can - I prefer it to be a bit more open. I always set up according to weather and wind, but those things occasionally change. Still leaning toward the MJ.

Brandon is notorious for not updating the website. Sometimes even if something is "in stock" it can take a number of weeks for Warbonnet to ship.

About the Superfly, if weight is a concern, certainly go with the BMJ. If open-ness is a concern, don't let it be. You can roll up the doors, clip back the doors. It can be a really open tarp depending on how you rig it. If the rain is coming in at all angles, though, the doors can be great.

It really comes down to how much you want to carry and spend. Both tarps can be really versatile depending on how you rig them.

I have wbbb and bmj. Was out with them four of the last five weeks, including the very wet weeks in late May and mid June. Stayed perfectly dry.

Thanks shsylvester - that adds to my confidence level. I should probably order the Superfly just to be safe, but I think I'll be the curmudgeon and go with the mambajamba cuz that;s the way I roll.
