I recieved one of the fisher canoe country map book as a christmas present this past year. It contains useful size maps [17" by 22"] of both the Quetico and the BWCA. It show the portages and the camp sites for each area. This is a great book to add to your referance libraries. Great for planning trips and just daydreaming about future trips. I now have trips planned out three or four years. Just thought I would share this information with everyone
I saw the books at Midwest Mountaineering in Minneapolis about two weeks ago. I think the price was right around $17 bucks. Their phone number is [612] 339-3433. You can also get them on the fisher web site. fishermaps.com $17.95 plus shipping.
Caution - I have one of these and actually did a 110+ mile Quetico trip using the only the detached pages out of the book for navigation. Not a great idea - some detail is missing on the book maps and they aren't as current as the Fisher maps the outfitters sell.
To wit - South of Kashapiwi there is a HUGE beaver bog and a new Eastside portage... neither of which showed up in the book map. Cost us 3-4 hours of trying to follow the very old and overgrown portage on the West side.
However they are great for winter day dreaming and planning.
"You're not serious about wearing sandals on this portage.... are you?"
