How was your trip?

I just read your post under the gear section (I believe) footwear. You don't see anyone wearing scandals once a person gets off the beaten path.

My trip was fabulous. I finished my trip sooner than expected, so maybe I should have added a few more miles to it.

Yes, spill it.

Did you run the falls of the Falls Chain?

Ride the moose on Kawnipi?

In a nutshell -

Man Chain portages were a challenge. Downed trees that had to be chopped apart so we could pass, thigh deep mud, slippery mud on steep sloped granite outcroppings and one portage that you had to use some technical climbing skills to get up - and even so I came within a hair's breadth of toppling over backwards on... with the food pack on my back.

The Falls Chain was beautiful, though a few of their portages were 'fun' too.

Kawnipi delivered on fishing, big time. 24 and 28" Walleyes cast after cast, when I wasn't catching football sized Bass.

Nine days - 120 miles (including the fishing side trips) entered and exited at PP.

Trip report will eventually follow. Thanks for asking!

Sounds good.

The rolling hills of little jackpine are cool, are they not?

The ones at the north side of Saganagons and through the falls chain into the south part of Kawnipi.

I was very impressed with the 1995 Bird Lake fire area - which extends for many miles - the new growth is beautiful.... though I imagine that those who know it 'pre-burn' might have a different opinion.

Also known as Fire #141 and it burned anywhere from 5 to 8 percent of the park. I wrote what I thought about the burn in my trip report (not posted yet).

Although fire is necessary for the forest, it's not as visually pleasing (for me) as the western half of Kawnipi Lake (old growth trees).

Absolutely, the north part of Kawnipi is just... Stunning. Amazing.

But... Give it a few years. It will be awesome in my lifetime.

Take me back to Kawa Bay. I want to explore the Wawiag River up past the old Indian village. Did you ever feel a mystical tug at your conscience? It comes to a dead end portage wise so it probably doesn't get heavily traveled. (Nobody bothered us.)
