I have been using a Frost Pack cooler for many years. Been thinking aboout getting a larger cooler. I like eating fresh food way better than the dehydrated stuff. Was wondering how many others use coolers and what types you use.

I like the looks of the poly box method inside the insulated pack. This method was highlighted in the Boundary Waters Journal. The price is way to much for me though. It got me thinking about one of my 30 liter barrels. I was thinking of glueing some old sleeping mats on the inside of the barrel for insulation. I would like to know if any one has ever tried to insulate a barrel before as any experience they might have in doing so would be very helpful in this project.

Tony,

There is a discussion on the trip planning forum part of this message board. On 3/1/05 Rookie started a string to which many replied.

Not quite a response - I do use the Plastic box advertised in the BWJ and other sites. It offers a tight seal and as far as I can tell is rodent proof. The 'insulation' they offer (and charge extra for!) is $.15 worth of thin plastic foam. Don't waste your money. Line it with 1/2 inch foam board on all 6 sides and with a frozen gallon jug of H2O you're good for 5 days in July and August- assuming the steaks, bacon etc is frozen when you load it. BTW I agree - eating well up there is very high on my priority list.
