Took a boat ride out of LaCroix to Crane on the Loon River. The two RR track cable portages were cool and so was the relaxing ride after a week of portage/paddling . I'm sure this added to the experience but it was beautiful and would like someday to take family there. (who would'nt be unanimous on the wilderness/portaging trip) Is there camping on the river, any outboard weekly rentals/outfitters that are on or really closeby the Loon? What species of fishing is good? Is it Canada or U.S. or borderline? RABC or passports needed for next year? etc. .... OTH Where is the nearest gravel road or tow in? ......

Did you rent a boat or get towed in? If towed in who was your outfitter? We took a tow out of Crane last summer and it was a blast. For a real good time hire Randy from Gateway, then HANG ON!!!!

We got towed out from Bottle portage rock by the outfit that used to own Curtain Falls. Big lodge on Lacroix. Went in from Ely with Dan. What a kidney bouncer on LaCroix on June 8, but the ride to Crane thru Loon was worth it! Our pilot was a round faced, quiet, middle aged fella and I think the tug was Zupp's. I can't believe we went over that little rapids/narrow falls! I wpuld probably lost a lower unit.

I second the tow with Randy quite a ride---I've tried all the others, but Randy is a true northwoods character. He took us up the Loon river in his jetboat when NO ONE else would or could back in mid-May.
Overthehill--I'm not sure about camping on the Loon River it straddles the international boundary so you might be able to get a crown camping permit and stay on the Canadian side. You shouldn't need an RABC because you would be entering at Crane Lake which has a customs station on the water---you just take the water taxi to it show proper ID and you are set.
Although I prefer Randy at Gateway---for your purpose of rental and coordinating paper work, and a tow Anderson Outfitters would be of great help. Give them a call--thye should know.
