Ok if I order a Blackbird I’m wondering about insulation on the bottom side. My first trip this year will be the last week of May with a solo in August. Last year during this May time frame we had three nights around 28 degrees. I have been looking at a full size 20 degree Incubator under quilt.
My question is would I be able to get by with using my Synmat 7 DXL in the double layer blackbird or should I just go ahead and pull the trigger on a under quilt also?
In my tarp thread OBX2Kayak said I’ll spend more $$$ and think he is right ;-)
Hammocking creates new ways to spend all sorts of money ... if you let it.
Sorry, I have no experience with the Synmat.
When I first acquired my WBBB 1.7 DL, I attempted used my old Thermarest. It worked just fine (at least down to about 30 degrees).
But, I eventually purchased a 3/4 down underquilt because of the weight and space savings. It is more comfortable than the Thermarest.
Oh, I have also successfully used a $12 WalMart 1/8" yoga pad (it's wider than the famous WW blue pad) down to 35 degrees. Not sure if it could go lower because I purchased my UQ first.

I use a 2inch piece of foam I got at a garage sale I cut it down and sewed a cover. I roll it up put a garbage bag around it and strap it go a canoe thwart. It keeps me very warm been up in may and Sept and haven't brought anything but a 30 degree bag, which I just use like a blanket. I'll try and post a picture, very comfy and cheap I got about 5 bucks in it.
I think you'll find that inflated mats don't work out well at all in a gathered end hammock. An underquilt is the best way to go if you have the means. Never heard any complaints about an incubator. It'll keep you plenty warm.
