For me I just didn't like all the low to the ground stuff of setting up a tent, dealing with the air mat, crawling in and out, etc.

With a hammock I'm upright when I set up. My back and knees thanked me for this. There's also the fact that I'm more comfortable when I sleep. That counts for a lot.

Wow, lot's of reasons. Ease of use, comfort, freedom to hang most anywhere, save a few ounces (over my old backpacking tent), easier to fit in my kayak, and on and on ....

Mostly for the comfort. Ease of site selection over finding a tent pad without some rock, root or other bump for the night ahead and ease of set up are nice as is the smaller and lighter pack options. I do not miss the sounds and smells of the person squeezed into the allotted space that was never big enough inside the tent. It was reported on a recent trip that they don't miss mine, either.

I sleep much better in the hammock and so do my camp mates.

Most definitely the comfort for me. Sleeping on the ground I would toss and turn all night long and be very sore in the morning no matter what I slept on. Sleeping in the hammock has taken away all the issue with being sore in the morning and has given me many more perks. I can setup over rocks and roots but my favorite is to setup my hammock right at the waters edge, puts me right to sleep.

Only one reason for me and that was my back. It was torture for me to crawl up out of a tent in the mornings. I sleep much better now and don't wake up with back pain.

Comfort is definitely a major component. I sleep much better in the hammock than on the ground. In fact, I prefer it to a traditional mattress. I sleep in a hammock at home now.

Site section is also a factor. You need "cooperative trees" but nothing smooth or particularly dry which is big.

With the hammock I always have a tarp to hang under, I don't need to set up a camp tarp if it doesn't look like rain. I take advantage of this on solos regularly. If it rains I just hang under the tarp, better than huddled in a tent, I can cook etc.

I agree with what others have said. Comfort is the biggest plus for me. Also, I'm a bit of a loner. I like having my own space at the end of the day. I also enjoy middle of the night rain storms more....I never have to wonder about water seeping in.

It was a comfort factor for me. Back hips and neck pain are gone with a hammock. Then I got many other things I did not plan on. I can hang anywhere, not just the 1-3 tent pads that most sites have. Get away from the others in the group at night so they don't have to listen to my snoring. I can hang by the lake, in the woods, or right in camp. On a hill or slope is no problem. Rocks or roots are not a factor. Rain inside the tent is a thing of the past.

i too found the comfort level so much better than crawling out of a tent. i have a bottom entry hh expl., so it is great stepping out into my slip-ons. i added whoopie slings this year so set up will be a breeze.
plainly said, my body just dose not ache sleeping in my hh.

I never slept well in a tent. Up every couple of hours tossing and turning. In a hammock I usually wake up in the same position I fell asleep in. As others said, I like to be able to get away from the group as well. They make a great chair for putting your shoes or boots on too!
