I have a Clark, I like it very much. The guys I go with have hennessy's. None of our group use tents anymore. I like the looks of that new exped.

I have had Hennessys and a switchback. Currently I own Warbonnets and a closet full of DIYs, netted and open.

I also have a Nemo Losi for going Gunflint. But that's not a hammock.

eno and warbonnet blackbird. Really like the looks of the Clark but could not come up with the dough.

ENO double nest and Warbonnet Black Bird here. Not sure which one I like more. I agree that the Clark hammocks look pretty sweet. I would like to try one out but I'm sure my wife would object:)

hh expedition, couple of eno's.

OD green net hammock from RVN used for quick naps but likely retired now. Picked up a Harmony Bliss double with bug net from Campmoor and use a Noah's tarp. I have an ALPS large comfort pad and mummy bag, but looking into under and over quilts with DYI options in mind. Straps DYI from an old tie down system when the rachets failed.

I intend to check out some others either at wing nights or other options with future plans to upgrade, but other gear has higher priority right now.

Warbonnet Blackbird and Warbonnet Traveler. Had a Hennesy but couldn't get comfortable in it.

DIY all the way. My first was a sort of clone of a Blackbird, with a couple twists. I've since developed my own design that allows my to lay any way I want to, not just on one diagonal. I just posted a (rather lenghty) thread on that if anyone is interested. I'd want to hijack this one.

Just ordered two WB Blackbirds and Mamajamba tarps (one for myself and one for a friend). We're looking forward to using them in the Quetico this summer.

I have hanging envy... What kind of underquilt do you have? I'm hoping I can spring for one this year.

I currently have a HH Ultralight Explorer but I'm going to start looking for a different hammock for winter camping. Getting in and out of the HH with all the winter gear is sometimes more difficult then I would like.
I might look for something with out the bug netting as it won't be needed at that time of year anyway's.

I've been mulling the "warmth factor" for a trip that starts this May. I have just thought all along that I would slip my thermarest into the pocket for insulation. But I also have a marmot winter down bag. Has anyone successfully rigged a sleeping back for use as an underquilt?

02/16/2012 11:09AM
Every once in while there is a tread on hammockforums.net about someone trying to do something like that. I think the bags are probably a little big for that to work out real well but some folks have been working with bags as a "pod system".

Decided to give it a go with something else. Found this on geartrade.com (my favorite gear site). It's youth size, so should equate to about a 3/4 length, which is all I need. I'll need to figure out how to rig it. $29.99.

Not an underquilt, but this site discusses using a sleeping bag as a cocoon around the hammock.

I bookmarked it because my son has the same sleeping bag and I had plans to try the system out with my Eno. Haven't tried it yet though.

Interesting. The bag I bought off geartrade (pictured above) looks to be about the same as the Kelty Galactic, but $100 cheaper. I'm hoping it's in decent condition and has sufficient loft. I'll use the zipper webbing to sew on webbing channels for shockcord and then figure out attachment to the hammock.

That site is Derek Hansen, a/k/a dejoha. he just published a book called the Ultimate Hang. Lots of good info in there.

Anyway, I have the Warbonnet Balckbird 1.7 double and 1.1 double.
I currently use a hennessy 70D hex tarp and have my modified Guide Gear 12x12.

Hello, Lorax! Haven't seen your name much recently. how ya been?

I could see that working out... How wide?. I make mine UQs 42 plus hem/channel. I wouldnt go wider than 44 myself, not needed and it makes suspension harder. If you have to trim the sides think about leaving so extra fabric on the outside so the down doesn't get compressed.

Did you know there is a DIY forum here?

No, I was not aware there is a DIY forum. I will know how wide the bag is when I receive it in the mail. Thanks for the suggestion on trimming.

I've been pretty good, thank you!

Almost forgot....I also have to add to my list an ENO doublenest.

I'm adding one more hammock this year, an ultralight for mid summer stuff. Don't know which one yet.

For some reason the DIY Forum has never taken off on BWCA.com. Over the years there has been extremely little activity. Now, suddenly, we have two DIY hammock threads there. Cool.

I didn't realize it was there till a couple of days ago. There are plenty of DIY ideas that show up on the gear or other forums. I think it just an issue of awareness.

Byers mosquito for this newbie, with Byers suspension. Equinox tarp (for now; looking for lighter for under $50), not settled on suspension, but have some Niteize guy lines. ccf pad. This is for an early August trip. Any thoughts?

As for suspension, make sure you don't use nylon straps. Use polyester straps, or make yourself somw whoopies slings. It's really easy and instruction are on hammockforums.

As for the pad, you probably want to have something to keep your shoulders warm, too. An SPE is cheap and easy. Again, hf has several how-tos on these.

Greetings hangers!

Finally joined this group. My two tripping partners and myself all have the Clark North American. I went with the larger sized tarp.

Just purchased a Claytor. Spent two nights in it at home trying it out. OMG, it's like night at day compared to a tent. Anyhow, I've been on the BWCA for 2 years now and never knew this forum existed. Just found out about after OBX2Kayak commented on a post I made in the Gear section.

Oh, and thanks for the material I stole from your other post.

Sold my first hammock, a HH Backpacker UL. Kept the hex tarp.
Then bought a WBBB 1.7 dbl to replace it.
Got a Guide Gear 12x12 tarp (the old actual 12' model) and modified it with extra loops and more reinforcement at the stress points.
Then bought a WBBB 1.1 dbl because my buddy wanted to borrow the 1.7 last summer on our canoe trip.
This spring I bought a used HG cuben 11 x 8.5 tarp.

My brother just got the Clark Flex-180 for hum & his 9 year old to use next week on our trip.

Hope we find sites with enough good trees :)

Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 double, stock suspension straps, Superfly tarp, and 20 deg Incubator underquilt. LOVE IT!!! Top quilt is going to have to wait until next year. Kind of blew my gear budget this year.

WBB 1.7 double, mamba jamba tarp.
No underquilt, not tope quilt, yet.

06/07/2012 03:40AM
WBBB 1.7 double with a WBBB Superfly.
All stock.
I use a Thermarest Timberline CCF for bottom insulation.
Someday I'll get the quilts, I'm just gonna have to be patient on that one for awhile.

I've used an ENO with optional bugnet for years. I recently scored on a used Clark NX-250. I love the Clark.I like the all-in-one package, especially the weathershield. I'll use my new warbonnet superfly as my tarp when rain threatens.

The ENO has been relegated to backyard day use by me. It's roomy but it's a hassle to install all 3 components to make it useable on a BWCA trip - hammock, bugnet and tarp.

My son will probably use the ENO on our future BWCA trips.

Hammock camping is the only way to go if you are getting a bit heavy or older. I always wake up well-rested with NO pain.
