I'm sure most find zip lock bags invaluable in canoe country. Now I see they have come out with giant pack size zip locks in heavier duty plastic. I'm going to try these for sure!

Hey guys, I got some for Christmas.....They are big, 2.0 ft X 1.7 ft. ZIPLOC. I think Cabela's has them in four packs...They'll keep things inside my packs dry for sure. Just one more thing I can't wait to try!

Ziploc Heavy-Duty Dry Bags Item: IF-590636 Price: $7.99 (per 4) Cabela's online

Walmart's had them for a couple of years. They work pretty well.

has anyone ever tried using the "space bags"? they are on infomercials, the ones where you just suck out the air with a vaccum. In the camping section at Walmart, i got some that are made by Coleman and Space Bag. It has a different kind of one way valve than the ones shown on the commercial, kind of a friction type thingy. I couldn't ever get mine to seal like the box shows, but they do work good as a big ziploc. I found the following site has a good selection of them. I don't think I paid quite as much for the set of three that i have. I thought i only paid something like 6 bucks for three. anyway, just an idea.

a friend of mine used those one time and although it was a little easier to compress than a regular ziplock we couldn't tell much difference

I tried the Zip Lock bags( not the real thing) from Wal Mart last year in the BWCA. The locking strip quit working after only two days. I definitly would'nt recomend them. Cabela's has the real "Zip Lock" brand clothes bags and they look like they are of better quality.I know the roll top bags with the bleeder valves are more money, but I think in the long run they will pay for themselves.

For the money go and get a box of "construction" garbage bags from walmart. We used them this summer w/ our jr. High guys to line our Duluth bags. Not a one ripped or leaked. So reliable that a food bag that was dropped while hanging it kept in the contents of the broken eggs & the cooking oil bottle that was in the bag (what a mess).

Trash compactor bags are heavy-duty also.

Kudos to the ziplock company! They protected my 35mm camera and 5 rolls of slide film while floating in shell lake for over 20 min!

jonwood, thanks for sharing how your "tested" zip lock bags. I'm sure it is an experience you will not want to repeat. I'm sure it has happened to all of us at one time or another.

I tried one of these big zip loc bags in my food pack and I am a little disappointed with them. The thickness of the plastic and the large pleated bottom are nice, but they seem to have scrimped on the zip closure. It is so narrow, it is hard to close up. If they made it as wide as the zipper on their regular freezer bags, they would have a very good product.

All....
I agree Pinecone.... the zip lock closure could be improved.....other than that they were a good liner bag for clothes and other gear in a personal pack..
