I don't know about the Q but for the BW I like to have both. I found that the maps usually differ on some things and I just cross reference the two to get all the info. I would guess it would be the same for the Q and since I like to carry a backup set of maps might as well get one Mckenzie and one Fisher.

Thanks-I've used both in my very limited experience in the BW and found both equally useful.

McKenzie vs. Fisher.... Fisher vs. McKenzie. You'll get answers favoring both. Many people who paddle are map nuts anyway and will take both. I count myself as one of those.

Your question asked about "preference", however. I prefer McKenzie in Quetico. Just because.

Some people are really passionate on both sides. I like Fishers in general because I use the maps so frequently and they are constantly wet, regardless of how much I try to keep them in a case.

However, McKenzie is excellent if you're going a little more off the beaten track and topo information is a big plus with navigation. If you are worried about portages and portage distance, both maps vary, but it's all apart of the adventure, right?....

If you're going for one set, Fishers are great for BWCA and will get the job done for the Quet. without a problem. For either type, you are likely to find some inconsistencies, just mark them down for the next time!

If you really want to impress your group get the maps by the Surveys and Mapping Branch Department of Energy, Mines and Resources of Canada. They have maps like our 7 minute maps from the US Geological Survey. They have the topographical lines, and portage trails but not distance. Oh they also do not have campsites marked but they are a great reference. I got mine several years ago. I transfer the info from Fisher to these and just use them. You need a way to keep them dry since they are just plain map paper. I found them more accurate that they others for shorelines etc.

Here is my advice for Quetico. Use either a Mackenzie or Fisher with the Quetico map you buy from the Canadian rangers as a supplement. The Fishers and MacKenzie have more detail and a better scale, but the Quetico maps show more portages that are not on either series. Just undertsand that portages are listed in meters and not rods on the Canadian maps.

Bogwalker is correct.
The Quetico maps from the 1980's are the best. However the new map that has come out last year is very acurate. And yes it has several updates. New lake names for one example.
Check out the new map at http://www.chrismar.com/ look in products then Quetico Adventure Map. They are pricey thought about $15. But by far the better of the maps used for Quetico.
