I finally put together my plans for my trip in July. It will be 13 days, now I have to get my meal list together.

On two of the days I have a couple different options depending on what I find once I'm on the water.

I tried to post my trip, again. I had to go through it after it was pasted and move it around to get it look like the way I put it together. Now I just hope it doesn't move it around again after I submit it. If it doesn't align things up, all I can say is sorry. Go to Solotripping.com and you'll pretty much see it as I had typed it. Looks like a great trip - I'll be trailing you by a week at least as 1/2 way.

10-13 miles a day when soloing is a good goal, weather permitting - big water in a solo however can be scary so be careful.

Looks like a wonderful trip! I have never solo'd seems ambitious to me, maybe I just like to lay-over and fish more than paddle every day.Good luck! I want to read your "Trip Report"

I usually do ambitious trips and most of my canoe trips are solo. I don’t fish on my canoe trips, but I like to paddle. I don’t mine putting in long days if needed. The daylight hours will be longer, fewer people and I can camp anywhere I find room.

I hope to take many pictures with my new camera, but what I’ve found in the past is the more ambitious the trip, the fewer pictures taken.

I do an itinerary to give me an idea where I would like to be to complete the trip in the time frame I set. I’m making adjustments as I go. I normally finish my trips earlier than expected, but that doesn’t mean I will finish this one early. I have a couple extra days to finish the trip, if needed.

Hi Chuck,
Do you need to take extra precautions when solo tripping?
I have a 38 SPECIAL solo canoe and would like to try it someday. I am 59 years old and in fairly good shape and have been on several BW trips. I am just wondering if it would be a good idea for someone my age to attempt this solo.

I try and minimized my risk. I try not to over extend myself past my comfort level. I have years of experience in the outdoors /wilderness and have a fair amount of canoe handling ability.

You are the only one who can tell you if you have the knowledge, experience and the ability to do a solo canoe trip. There are many skills that need to be developed. Are you a leader or follower in your prior canoe trips? What type of canoe trips have you taken in the past with the group?

Based upon your post, if I was you, I would start with a short, couple day solo trip somewhere and gradually work your way up to longer, tougher trips until you gain knowledge and experience.

Solo trips aren’t for everyone. They are a lot of work unless you go some where and just base camp every day.

On solo trips you are by yourself and you have to make all the decisions and you do everything yourself.

I definitely wouldn’t take this trip that I posted as someone’s first trip.

Sorry, I not familiar with the 38 special. I like canoes where I sit in a tractor style seat. You do have to beware if the type of canoe you have gives you the ability to do the trip desired.

This post is not meant to be all encompassing just to get you to think about a few things.

The other option is to go with just one other person on your canoe trips. They can be just as fun and a little less work.

I’ve been patiently waiting in line for my turn to go on a canoe trip this year. I can finally see the front of the line.

I will paddle this morning on the Mississippi River (which I do several days a week), then work this afternoon / evening. I have to work on Saturday, also.

I will have time to pack everything Saturday evening.

I will leave Sunday morning from the Twin Cities, making my way to Duluth, the North Shore, Isabella and finally Ely. I will be camping at Fall Lake (campsite #33) Sunday night because it’s fairly close to my put-in, on Monday morning on Moose Lake.

I will be gone up to 2 ½ weeks. This should be an excellent two week solo trip.

I will have my Prism on top of my light gray Suburban in the area or at campsite #33 on Fall Lake if anyone is around and wants to say hi.

Two plus weeks alone in Quetico is a real dream for me, maybe someday I'll be fortunate to make it happen. Enjoy every moment and be safe.

I’m back from my spectacular solo canoe trip that covered over 150 miles in Quetico.

This was an aggressive trip because of the shorten time period that I finished the complete loop. My original plan was to complete the trip in 13 days. I finished this trip at noon on the eleventh day (07-12-07) and that includes one day lay-over.

Once I get moving during the day I have a hard time stopping early. If I wanted to sit around I could just stay home.

This trip was physically challenging due to several factors; the shorten time frame, the extreme heat and humidity, extreme portages, and as Robert Perkins said, The Wind…Nothing but the Wind!!!

I will eventually post a trip report and probably a few photos.
