I am considering entering at Lac La Croix Indian village and going up the Maligne through Sturgeon and out through Lonely, Walter, Elizabeth, Jesse, Maria, Batchewaung, Nym. My trip wll start on May 12. Does anyone have any input on the travel up the Maligne in the spring? It looks to be large enough that the river current should not be an issue...but I don't know. It looks like the portages are not too bad... fairly short anyway. (to me a bad portage is like the ones into and out of Halliday - long, muddy and lots of elevation) Also, is there anywhere to camp near the village - we would like to get an early morning start across La Croix to avoid big waves. I understand that you can get a tow from the village to Bell Island near the entrance to the Maligne but I don't know who to contact or how much it costs.
Any input is appreciated.

The portages on the Maligne are easy and well traveled.

Though not a raging river by anymeans,it will still slow you down a bit.

Like all rivers, alot will depend on water levels. You will come upon several areas of rapids on your way up river. As mentioned before, the portagees are very good. However, not all of the rapids have portages going around them. Personally, I would have gone the opposite way. I like to go with the flow.
