I know lots of people spend the Memorial Day weekend in the BWCA.

Where are you all going? Give me details! :)

I'm calling this my early fix...

Kawishiwi Lake up to Malberg unless the fishing slows us down. My brother and his wife and one kid are coming along. It's going to be about the fishing this time.... any tips?

Then I have to go back to work for four days before our "big" trip, which is taking us from Lake one through Weasle Lake PMA down the Isabella River up the Powow Lake PMA and potentially over to fishdance through the bush, then up Thomas, Hatchet, Ima, and over to Disapointment and out Snowbank.

Sounds like two nice trips.

I really like Fishdance and the pictographs.

Let me know how you do fishing on Alice & Insula (are you fishing?)

Yeah, we will be fishing. Will let you know how that turns out.

Are the picto's on Fishdance that visible? I have been looking for, well, a year now, but I haven't been able to "see" any. Tried the one on Kek and the one on Seagull but couldn't locate them.

Most people who go over to Fishdance find them okay. With the water levels quite low, you will probably be looking up the rock a little more than you would if it were 'normal' levels.

Have a great time!

Well, here's my report for the weekend.

The weather was awsome. The sun was shining, the wind was low. Got a little chilly at night.

Entered Kawishiwi Lake and traveled north to Polly and set up base camp on a northern island. First night fished Polly with fair results. A couple walleye off leeches and lindy's right out if front of camp in about 10 f.o.w. During the evening the fishing was slow. Sunday was fished Polly pretty hard with little/no luck so we decided to head north. We made it to Koma when we finally ran into fish. I won't give you my hotspot for fear of over pressure so I have absolutly nothing to say about the portage into Koma where the river run's into it ;)

Several eye's and bronzebacks (biggest was 18")

No pike, didn't seem to run into any aggressive fish.

Bugs... Blackflies were annoying enough I bug-doped up once. Skeeters were few and far between. Had one tick on me for the whole trip.

Didn't see much wildlife but I did have a niece that seems to... well... never ever shut up.

Loon, unusually quiet :(

Did you stay on Koma at all last weekend Hexnymph? I was on Mallberg Fri and Sat night before we headed back to Koma. We stayed at the Southern most campsite on Koma on Sun night. Ran into some good fishing on Sun evening. Smallies and Northern Pike, didn't have any luck with the Walleye's all weekend. It was a great trip.

No, we based out of Polly and day tripped to Koma.
Fished there for a while, ate lunch right were to stream enters Koma, fished some more and headed back.
We definitly caught more smallies than eye's there.... I think we pulled two or three keepers out of there vs. about 5 bass. Most of the eye's we caught were at our camp on Polly. (but the fishing was never "hot" there)

Any bear problems there?

None, I have never had bear problems up there(in the BW). We usually leave some cookware out but hang everything else and nothing has ever been disturbed. I all most feel left out.

I always go camping on memorial day weekend (my birthday weekend -May 30th) But this year for the first time in 9 years we did not go camping. Instead we had our baby girl!!! May 29th she weighed 6.4oz and was 19 1/2 inches long. So I guess it was worth skiping camping this year lol. And yes I have a lifejackt that already fits her ;)

Late reply - but I took a group out of Sawbill on Thursday the 27th. We base camped on Alton until Monday, when they had to leave. I crossed the Lujenida to Zenith (460 rods) portage on Tuesday and spent the next couple days in the Louse river loop. Came out on Friday, June 4.

I like the schedule of going in ahead of the holiday weekend and coming out after. Over the 4th I have a permit for Kawishiwi lake on Friday, July 2nd. I'll stay in through the weekend and come out and home on Tuesday. That way 2 vacation days give me a 5 day trip.
