Hey all! Our group is planning on a trip into the Argo- Darky area next year and I was wondering if anyone has been there recently and especially has anyone ventured over to Brent Lake. Mr Barley and I have been looking at Brent for several years now, so I would like your take on it.

We stayed on Argo for a couple of days back in 2003 and went south of Brent on our way to Ted and Earl. I loved Hurn Lake going that way-the terraced cliffs are really cool. Consider going through Elk, Hurn etc.

I have gone through Brent the last 2 years on my way up to Conmee. It is a nice looking lake that I hope to spend some time on in the future. There is an island campsite that has been burnt in the recent past, it is located toward the Eastern end of the lake. Along the SE end of the lake toward the McIntyre portage there is an area where the water seems to boil. We concluded that it must be some sort of spring and that we would be back to try the fishing around that area.

The campsites on Brent are limited! If you go on the Paddler's Campsite Database,Some are just hoaxes!

Our group is going through that area this spring too. We are planning on stopping for a couple of days to fish either Brent or Conmee. I've heard good things about both of them. Anyone have any advice as to which would have the better fishing?

There were two very good campsites on an island at the west end of Brent. If you are coming through Darky there is a long portage into Brent that is fairly flat. Heading east from the portage the lake will turn north, the island is near the head of the narrows before it enters the main body. We stayed at the campsite on the north end of the island and had a great view of the western and northern skies. Fishing in the narrows right off the campsite was also excellent for smallmouth and northern.

I was in Brent a while ago (late 80's) but I remember it was gorgeous and the smallies are 4lb. plus.
A side note... I distinctly remember paddling on Brent in the early morning with a fog on the lake and hearing a loon taking off on the water. It got louder as he tried to get lift off and he almost broad sided me and was maybe 5 feet in the air when he flew past and just missed me. Pretty cool stuff.
