When you combine the schedules of a teacher and an accountant the result is that the only viable time for a long trip is in late June. Considering all the ticks/flies/mosquitos...is it really a good time to head into a PMA?

In some ways June may be better than other times due to typically higher water levels then later in summer. Lots of PMA's are easier to pass through or into when water levels are normal to high.
Bring DEET, a head net, a good tent and you will have a great time.

An accountant? Who's the accountant? I'm an accountant. This is way off topic, here's my list of things to do when I retire (that I certainly can't do during tax season):
Spend all winter in a warmer climate, preferably a Carribean island.
Daytona 500
Australian Open (tennis)
NCAA Final Four
Back on topic...agree with the above especially water levels and PERMETHRIN.
Are black flies gone by late June?

The purpose of the journey is not to arrive.

Black flies.
They might be gone by late June but it depends on when they first hatch. I would not bet on them being gone and would bring your gear to combat them.

Hi all my first post in this Forum. I am the other accountant though I am a corporate accountant. I have a different list if I won the lottery and did not have the Fall and winter busy season. A month or more in and out of the BW would be high on my list more than a warm local.
I am excited about our trip to a PMA this summer because I prefer a vacation with some hardship. As long as no one gets hurt to badly it makes for better stories for many years to come. I think this is also the end of an era for Rob and I our sons will be 7 this summer and this is likely the last trip without them so we have to do it up big. so the begining of a new era we will have to slow down a little until they get a little older and can carry our gear at least.

I've heard good things about premetrin = bugs die on contact, no worry about Lyme's disease, and one of the few methods of actually combatting black flies. It is supposed to be a human fabricated version of a natural chemical found in chrysanthemum flower and safe in low doses.
That said, I have also heard bad things about it...namely that the MSDS on it includes the C word.
Better living through chemistry or toxic avenger?

Yeah, well, the big C can happen to anyone at any time for any reason. Since I don't live in California, I'm not going to worry about it :) haha
Trust, but verify. The Lord will provide !!!!

I have been twice now recently in late June. Not sure what the big deal is. Bugs were not bad, ticks were isolated and the lakers were actually biting well. freak coincidence or not but I would not give it a second thought. GO!

quote Chilly: "If your talkin bushwacken, late June is between REALLY BAD and just BAD. "
That is perfectly said! More foliage, more bugs, more heat more humidity and more energy exerted. But you will cover LESS ground.
But hey, bushwaking isn't suppose to be easy. But it is suppose to be enjoyable....
