OK I'm in the market for a new 4 man tent. Used a dome tent from LL Bean for years, OK, but heavy at 13 lbs or so.

Is the Eureka Timberline as good as advertised?

I am on my second Timberline 4. My first one (which I still have-needs a new zipper) lasted for over 10 seasons. I would recommend getting the one with two doors. It helps with ventilation and gives alternatives to sleeping arrangements. If you need some storage you could add the vestibule for added space, but I have enough room in the tent for gear if it is 2-3 of us. I also can leave gear under the rain tarp-so I choose not to have the extra weight of the vestibule. Like most 4 person tents it is too small for 4 people. For 2 people I would recommend looking at the Eureka Apex 2XT or REI's Half Dome 2. It has enough room for two (or for me as a solo) plus each have 2 doors and the 2 vestibules leave room for gear and access. Good luck and have fun hunting for your new tent.

Every time I've been in the BWCA it has rained horizontally at least once. On one trip we used a 4 person Timberland Outfitter we rented from an outfitter. I'm glad there were just the two of us. We had to curl up in the middle to stay dry. This year we'll be taking my 3 person Marmot Hoot convertible. I've blasted it with from all sides with lawn sprinklers and hoses continuously for over an hour and it stayed dry inside. Marmot has replaced the Hoot with a new model. The only difference is a small clear panel or two in the rainfly.

had good luck thus far with a recently-acquired Marmot Loft, expect a larger model would perform as well, but don't recall of they have a 4-body version of it. Know that if they say 4-person, that's all they mean with interior space, but they have pretty good vestibule space in a few of their models like the Loft. Have had a Eureka and a Jansen that I wouldn't recommend very highly altho they served me well in thier day.

I would look into the Cabela's XPG series of tents as well as the GoLite Hex 3 with nest.
