I've never been to Quetico. Are there latrines at any of the camp sites?

There are no latrines in the Q. Bring a shovel! There also are no firegrates.

Quetico bathroom facilities are where you put them. You are required to bring a small trowel or shovel in with you and do not be surprised if the rangers ask to see yours when you pick up your permit or if they stop you while on your trip.

Go back at least 150 yards from any water and dig a hole deep enough for your waste and TP to go into and be buried. After you complete your task make sure everything is in the hole and replace the dirt and sod burying the watse.

I take a LNT prinicple with me so when I dig my hole I carefully remove any sod and place off to the side. I then dig my hole and fill it back up upon completion. The last step is to replace the sod and sprinklethe area with leaves, grasses etc to leave it looking natural.

Many of us I am sure have visited camps where previous users did not take proper care of their bathroom facilites. It is not a pleasant site with TP and human waste strewn about. Please be sure to follow the proper process so all can enjoy the area.

Some folks are a little put off with the whole no latrine thing. After you do it once or twice it's no big deal. I like to take my little shovel and my "business" to an island or a shoreline away from any campsites.

Brings new meaning to a growler...

I never quite got the hang of it, I found it altogether a pain requiring a lot more planning; if you know what I mean.

Really the only part of the Quetico experienc I don't enjoy.

And I agree, we've found more than one beautiful campsite temporarily "ruined" with TP and excrement strewn everywhere. We could never determine if it was the result of poor technique or interested critters.

Kick the moss over dig the hole as deep as you have time for, fill it up then cover it up. Oh and make a mental map of the general location as to prevent unfortunate outcomes.

a good tip is after your done with your first trip, dig your next hole when your done. Then it's ready for you and you'll know where the first hole is in relationship to your pre-made hole.

I like it and I don't.

You can camp anywhere in Q. Most folks use previously used sites and I do too most of the time. I've had some wonderful remote, hidden places that I LNT camped.

Way too many folks do not deal with their waste well. I don't get it. One of the best things to do to preserve the freshness of your camp environs is to not crap there. Sure sometimes its the middle of the night, but most times you could go for a longer stroll or even hop in the canoe and paddle to another place(not another campsite).

Too many of the real nice camps in Q have mine fields behind the campsite that keep you alert when searching for firewood.
