Great story and great details.

Don't sweat the fishing quality. Sounds like you had some weather patterns during your trip that would really upset the fish.

I've been doing the BWCA for nearly 15yrs and this summer was my best fishing ever. Previously I'd never had even had average fishing success. It is a toatlly different style of fishing because of the lack of weeds and "normal" lake structure. I'm still learning and loving every minute of it. You'll catch your trophy. I caught mine this year, a 42" 20+lb pike. Took long enough.

Nice report, thanks for sharing your adventure!

(BTW, the big pike are on the big lakes as a rule, though there are a couple of smaller lakes that grow 'em big too - Spoon and Ramshed come to mind)

Log in again before your next trip and we'll put you onto the toothy beasts.

Fantastic report. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait for my trip up to Knife, August 11th and to share it when I get back.

Beemer, we're starting to think about our next trip, and would like to get a little farther away from the crowds, any suggestions as to places to go to find those big toothy beasts?

I'm the world's best theoretical fisherman and that's about as far as it goes. I do know that aforementioned smaller lakes - from personal experience and advice from those wiser than me - hold some more than their share of large pike.

Busted 20 lb Spiderwire on one on Spoon recently - actually it was probably a biteoff - ALWAYS USE STEEL LEADERS - when fishing for water wolves.
