I am looking to make a winter trip this year and I am looking for advice covering the following topics:

1) Skis or snow shoes?
2) type of tent
3) type of pulk
4) locations to try (5 day trip)
5) fishing tips
6) clothing advice

I am going to hit the winter symposium in Oct so I should get some good info their. I also know that much have this has been covered in some previous posts but just checking if anyone has some pearls of wisdom that haven't been posted yet.

Thanks

As far as fishing tips what I like to do is bring tip-ups and set them up for northern pike(I don't know what you are going for). This way if it is very cold out you can fish and and sit by a fire on the ice or land. Then just run out to one when it goes up.
I like to wear wool clothing and always make sure to bring extra clothing and make sure it stays dry. Also BRING an extra pair of boot, you never know if you will get the first pair wet and if you happen to you will be grateful to have the extra pair.
I always camp in a cold tent and use a sleepling bag rated to -60F. I wear a hat at night to conserve as heat, a lot of heat escapes from your head so you will want to conserve it. Don't sleep with your face in the bag if you choose to cold tent it, condensation will build up inside and you will be miserable. Hope this is a start!

Vikinfan, the symposium will really help answer a lot of your questions. I have enjoyed my time more while using a hot tent. You can rent one with a stove and a toboggan in either Ely or Duluth.

1. I bring skis and snowshoes, but snowshoes will travel well on land (portages) and across lakes.
2. A hot one!
3. I like long toboggans
4. Do you plan on moving each day?
5. no good fishing advice :(
6. dress in layers, I like wool too- get some down booties, they are great and can keep your feet warm even while sleeping.

What is meant by a hot tent?

A hot tent is a tent with a stove in it for warmth.
