In the Ely area what radio stations are there that will give a weather report on a regular basis. I plan on bringing a very small radio only for that reason, if there is a station that is. I think knowing what the weather forcast will be would be very important for planning day to day trips. Anybody else do this? Feel free to post stations from other areas in the BWCA as well.

WELY 94.5 FM (Ely station) has frequent weather and is pretty easy to get in the wilderness I have been told. I do not bring a radio so I do not have first hand knowledge.

WELY also has a home spun feel to it, plays oldies and northern flavor music (polka, bluegrass). It has emergency local messages for those out in the wilderness or those who have no phone-yes there still are some up there with no phone. It also has programs specifically for canoe folk.

My planning goes by what I see and feel in the sky. Clouds and wind can be read and watched. Night time sky and feel of the air can tell you about the next few hours. I always go to bed with everything secure (including the canoe always tied up) so if a storm does blow up I can sleep confident knowing nothing will blow away. I hate getting out of a warm bag to go into a cold wet rain.

If the clouds look threatening or there is lightning I head for shore. If it is real windy I am careful on the water. I have always found weather forecasts to be marginally accurate anyway. I rely on my own observations. If you feel more comfortable with a radio do that. Each person should do what they are comfortable with. I just chose to use my own knowledge and senses.
