gshaw,
I will be making this same trip toward the end of August with my 13 year old son. This was also my very first BWCA trip almost 20 years ago. I've heard, from what I would consider a reliable source, that the small mouth action on Disappointment can be quite good. Just curious what fishing techniques you used. Did you try any live bait, or strictly artificials? It sounds like the fishing was a bit spotty, but were there any specific fishing spots you could steer me towards?
Thanks,
Snakecharmer

No one place was better than the other, IMO. Everywhere we tried along shore was a drop from shore immediately to 30ft, along with downed timber and rocky bottoms, so the whole lake looked primed, to me. We didn't do any dawn fishing, but the bite picked up at dusk. I got some big hits, but nothing too aggressive.
I've been told the channel to the north of the Snowbank/Disappointment portage had great smallie action, but when i tried it, it wasn't any better than the rest of the lake.
My friend in the bow fished some Rapala with a spinner on front (in line) and continuously threw towards shore. He steadily boated small - i mean SMALL - smallies with it. That kinda fishing is a PITA to me, although it was frustrating watching a guy sitting 13ft ahead of me boat fish after fish for days and I was catching nothing. I, on the other hand, was throwing EVERYTHING i had towards the middle, deeper part of the lake's bays and even open water. Topwater (when it calmed), Mepps, dipsy divers, you name it. Hits every now and then, but nothing on line. I spent the most time with every color jig and plastic body, as well as many deep running cranks. A straggler walleye every so often, but that was it. The water was very warm so i expected the walleyes to be quite deep, but nothing. I'd even see largemouth follow up quite a few times, but they wouldn't give my bait the time of day.
I didn't use live bait, i'm not into that kinda thing. Too much of a hassle for me. Could have also been the weather, as a cold front arrived a couple days before we did. I don't know enough about that stuff though. The sol-lunar charts said the fishing was supposed to rock, though ;)
