Great report. I soloed almost the same trip a few years ago, except that the new portage was not clearly defined so I was up the creek, in and out. I also stayed at that crummy campsite, and I could barely find a flat spot for myself, you folks must have used all your camping savvy to find room for everyone. I took a tow across then quiet Burntside on the way in and paddled it on the way out, and never did have the wind with me. This brought back memories for me. Thank you.

thanks for the report, lets me know what we'll do on the portage vs. creek option. We are out next weekend and can't wait, your trip report didn't alleviate any of my angst either!

I did that trip about 15 years ago in early September with a friend. The portage into Crab was a nightmare as parts of it were flooded over. Took us 4 or 5 hours. By the time we got to Crab Lake we were so exhausted we camped at the first campsite on the lake. Before we could set-up, a large thunderstorm rolled over the trees above us with no warning and we got drenched. That night was very cold. I remember my friend saying, "Boy, this isn't for P&&&&&y's". After that the trip went great. Really enjoyed the large island site on Cummings, and there was no one else around. Stayed there for 2 nights. Caught several Bass and Northern Pike and feasted. Caught about a 4 lb Largemouth on Korb Lake. Sounds like not much has changed.

Nice report. Just looking at the pictures and the tracks don't look like bear tracks, but dog or wolf tracks. I would think a bears would be much flatter, more oval shaped. I am voting wolf, but anyway's, always cool to see wildlife in the woods, as long as it is not with your supper in their mouths!!!!
