Jon, Try eBay, they have some pretty good deals if you know what you are looking at. Look at their listings, then go to that companies web site for particulars. If you plan to bid, check the sellers feed back rating before you bid. The other option is to shop the outfitters for used equipment. Sure the stuff is used, but the outfiitters are good and reputable folks that will set you up with a tent that has many years of good use left. Good luck.

I just bought a Kelty Trail Dome 2, it was only $100. Other than not having vestibules, it has every other essential quality. it would be a little tight for 2 big guys. Wenzel might offer a tent closer to the 50 dollar price range. I would check out www.campmor.com

Well I see that Coleman has a 5-7 2 person tent called the sundome. They say it garenteed to keep the rain out and has a warrenty. I think I will buy it. It's only 38 bucks so I think it's worth a shot. Anyone else have any comments on this tent?

You get what you pay for in a tent, spend alittle more than $50 to ensure your comfort. Look for aluminum poles - stronger, lighter and less likely to shatter the way fiberglass does. Make it a free standing tent - easier to move around and shake out the dirt and debris but still stake it down! A full coverage rain fly of polyester instead of nylon will keep you dry and well vented (nylon flys stretch and will sag against the tent body) Try Eureka, they make pretty good tents at reasonable prices. Also look at Kelty's new Gunnison 2, at $150 it's a nice deal.

This spring I bought a REI Half-dome 2. It is less than $150, room for two (but I use it as a solo) has two big vestibules, two doors and has good ventilation. At 5 lbs it fits nice in my pack. It has aluminum poles and plenty of room for me (6"5" and 220). It was just on sale for less than $130.00-but I think that sale ended. This tent just finished a 4 day trip in the BWCAW and handled the conditions well including the 30+ mph NW wind that blew all day and the tent was not protected by any trees or obstruction. Nice tent.

i picked up the eureka apex t2 2 weeks ago it was only 130 and well worth it. its got superior ventaltion to anything ive seen yet, its 3 season, has 2 vestubiles, light wieght, bath tub construction, tear resitant material,a thick rain fly, and has storm tie downs.
and last weekned we we're out on the Croix in a hellish storm with wicked gusts and driving rain with quarter size hail in spurts. and i stayed dry as a bone.
but as was pointed out you get what you pay for and if you spend less than a 100 (in my opinion) you will reget it eventually, and of course it will be at the worst time.

I found it, the best tent ever for under a 100 bucks. I bought the Coleman exponent model INYO 2 tent. (exponent is a new line by coleman) This tent cost 70 bucks at gander mountain. You don't see the word coleman much on this messageboard and I think we all tend to overlook thier products for some reason. But let me tell ya, this tent I got is awesome and I highly recommend it. I've weathered three thunderstorms already with it and haven't had a drop of water enter the tent. It is well vented and I haven't had any condensation. It only wieghs 4.5 lbs and easy to assemble. Go get it, you won't regret it.

I agree with bogwalker. The REI half dom is my greatest purchase ever! I have used this tent 4 times a year for 3 years. this tent has made it through heavy wind's, hail, thunder storms, and general wear and tear. In my opinion it is the best bang for your buck. I also would suggest the footprint made for the tent. Don't go cheap on the only shelter you have in the wood's. You can check out the tent at REI.com. It's on sale now. I just like to add I'm not affiliated with REI. Lee

Less than $50, that maybe a bit difficult to get a good tent, like other mentioned, you often get what you pay for. This time of year you may be able to get a good deal on a tent from a small hunting/outdoors store. But it takes time and effort to find the best deal sometimes. I saw several tents for $50-100 at a store that was getting rid of floor models they were good tents. For the money you may consider Kelty tents, from what I have heard they are good quality and the prices is good. Remember that the tent is your home while away. If the weather turns nasty you want a warm dry place to go. I have purchased cheap before and will never again. Having to leave in the middle of the night because of being soaked was a drag. Fortunately it was close to home, going into BW I would not take a cheap tent.
