hi all....

I've been to the boundary waters a few times, tons of fun. I'm 24, fit, and have no problem with a difficult portage. All trips have taken me deep into the BWCA. I'm thinking of taking my girlfriend, brother, and a 2nd female up this summer. The last trip I took we had 2 women who toughed it out, so I know a woman can make any portage a man can. BUT, i'm seeking a good beginner trip with some good fishing, not too much traffic, not a whole lot of portaging (2-4, not overly long)... any suggestions?

Thanks a ton!
Tom

I might suggest a trip to Insula, out of entry point one. None of the portages are bad, and good fishing is abundant in Insula, Hudson, Alice and the Kawishiwi River. Let me know if you have any more questions about it.

I'll second Bruce's suggestion. Lake One (EP 30) entry through numbered lakes to Insula and lakes in that area is a good trip even for experienced paddlers, but especially for newer paddlers. You really will not have tough portages until the one from Hudson into Insula (but even that is not a killer). If you feel that is too agressive stop on any of the numbered lakes.

You will not be alone-but you won't feel crowded. The fishing in numbered lakes is pretty good. Because you have been to the BWCAW before you should have no problem navigating the islands and bays of numbered lakes. This is usually the only thing that gives newer paddlers difficulty.

EP 30 is a popular entry so book early. There are lots of permits everyday-but they go quickly. Plan your trip-check if any permits are available and book it soon. If Lake One is gone-come back with a list of available entry points and we can recommend from there.

Good Luck and enjoy the journey.

Ditto on Lake One to Insula. Six portages toal. Last portage into Insula is 120 rods but not too bad. Insula with it's multitude of bays and islands can be a little confusing. They also break up the lake so there are little nooks and crannies to tuck away in and get away from people. Good shot at seeing moose. Good shot at hearing wolves.

When are you planning on taking this 'easier' trip?

There are a number of weeks in June, and August where there are not many permits left.

If you want to check on entry availabilities, go to bwcaw.org, then click on the left on availabilities and enter your date. You will see what is still available.

If you have any questions feel free to email me.
