I'm looking for any information on Albert Lake. I've found a couple of threads on a Google search and it sounds like an interesting body of water. We are headed into Quetico June 9th and will be in the vicinity of Albert. I'm wondering if it would be a good day trip destination. Any possible campsites? Fishing? Any other information?

Thanks.

We had met a group coming out who had been to Albert (also was 2nd week of June). They said they did well on the bass. Campsites; the closest confirmed site would be on the SE shoreline of Jean. I would guess it to be easily within an hours paddle and portage from there into Albert.

YB,

I saw from the Quetico PCD Spotter Map site that you were up into Bent Pine. How was the fishing up that way, in particular Bent Pine Creek? Anything of great interest in that area?

Snakecharmer,

Our route took us from Jean through Ceph, Burntside(west), Clair, Bentpine, Trail & then westward, spending one night on Bentpine. Had I to do it over, a night would have been spent on Burntside and a layover on Bentpine. Fish were easy to locate on both lakes. There is an abundance of structure and what little time was spent fishing, we targeted points and reefs. Water clarity is stained and visibility is limited to 8-10'.

What route are you taking through this area?

YB,

At this point our planned route will take us through Beaverhouse/Quetico/Conk/Jean/Ceph/Burntside/Rouge/Sturgeon and eventually down the Malign River and out to Lac LaCroix (I think that's right...I don't have my maps in front of me at the moment). That is the basic route and we have some flexibility. We're looking for some good day trip possibilities for fishing and general exploration. I know you have had some correspondence with Mr. Barley - another member of our party. Your help is appreciated! Information is hard to come by for the area we're headed into. Hopefully that's an indication that it is not heavily traveled. Which part of your trip(s) did you see the most/least amount of traffic? Did you have any problems finding open sites?

Again, thanks for the information.

Its hard to say where you are going to run into the crowd. Obviously there will be a morning "launch" at the Beaverhouse/Quetico portage. These groups spread out quickly. The south arm of Quetico Lake is big. Once underway, you will see the occasionaly canoe in some bay and then an occupied site here and there with no tenants in view. Jean Lake will likely have campers at the juncture of the bay coming off Conk and then more at the popular sites at the "narrows". Little Jean and Yeh offered us a day and a half of solitude. West Burntside had a couple of groups out on the water as we passed. Once entering the creek route leading up to Clair Lake, we did not run into another group until we reached Badwater a couple days later. Campsites are not plentiful, but their numbers are more than adequate for the number of people present.

I've been told that a fire has swept through the area between Rouge and Sturgeon. Sites in the west end of Sturgeon will be in demand and they may not be all that appealing. One of my on-line friends recommends fishing the base of each rapids along the Malign as you work your way down to Tanner Lake.
