I am going to be going in through Round Lake heading towards Bat or Paulson. If you had to pick one of those two links to catch Lake Trout, which would you pick?

Im going in Fishing Opener.

My group did well on Bat lake for lakers last year, Gillis is worth a day trip as well.

I had some pretty good luck on Tuscarora near opener a few years ago. Round to Bat, Bat to Crooked, Crooked to Tuscarora, and then Tuscarora to Round is a good loop. Bat to Tuscarora can be done in a day as well, easier than Round to Bat, but then you skip by Crooked, which has decent trout fishing as well.

I would consider Gillis, Crooked and Tuscarora to all be destination lakes. If you were willing to go a bit further, Little Sag is a great destination lake and has great trout fishing.

I am doing the Brant-Gillis-Round Loop in September and have never fished specifically for Trout (Northern Pike Fan) and wondered what would the recommendation be for Lake Trout and Brown/Brook Trout fishing along this route?

Spoons, jigs, spinners??? Will the Lakers be in deeper water in September or shallow?

My plan at the moment is to camp 1 night on Bat or Gillis, 2 nights on Tuscarora and then a night on Missing Link which I heard only has Brown or Brook Trout in it.

We will be heading into this region later the following week. Leaning towards Gillis or Crooked for our basecamp, but could also see us pushing further to Little Sag or Gabi depending on our pace.

I'd vote for Bat of the two lakes you have proposed due to "better" day tripping options and proximity to Gillis and Crooked.

Good luck!

I had fantastic fishing for lake trout on Paulsen a couple years ago when I went in mid May. Caught several Lakers right from the shore on the island site and more casting around the island. They were not hard to find. The island campsite was pretty nice too with some pine trees that survived the fire. I would definitely recommend.

Lake trout like water that is a specific temperature and will be deeper or shallower depending on the lake and time of year to find that temp. In the spring when the water is cold, they will be very shallow. Later in the year, they will be deeper and can be harder to find. My experience is mostly from fishing in mid to late June, with Little Cleo spoons, trolling slowly, and trying to get 20 feet down or deeper.

Little Cleo spoons are awesome for trout, but you do need to get them at the right depth. When I say that I troll slowly, I mean I sometimes tell my buddy to stop paddling and I paddle slowly, depending on how deep we are trying to get. With a nice breeze I have caught trout just drifting. Adding weights can get you deep enough as well.

For September, how deep you are going to want to be depends on the water temps. I recommend at least starting with trolling to figure out where they are hanging out, then you can choose to switch over to jigging if you want. I don't usually jig but I know a lot of people have had good luck with jigs. If nothing is biting or the fishing is really slow, go deeper.

i would also choose Paulson , but i would also choose seagull for the entry point unless you want to explore/experience other areas/lakes. Eitherway theres only 2 campsites on paulson , get an early start ! or the day before.
