I currently use 6 inflatable Luci solar lights around camp and love them durable, pack small, and throw a good amount of light. I am looking into the Luci string lights and wondering how they compare? If you use them, are you happy with the light output? They are rated at 100 lumens. They also have a colored version that my gal would love, but they don't list the output for those on the box, or their website for some reason?

Love mine. I have 6 sets ( a little of a problem :O) ---
They are bulky and heavier , however I think one string light = at least 2, probably 3 normal luci lights.
They now have a larger version - much bulkier , but way more convenient in charging ( can leave lights up and move base to where you need it ) and way brighter with more lights (20 bulbs on 44' of string-- and longer run time-- I believe like 40 hours on a low charge. I actually had these up most of last summer on my deck and wrapped around a large tree limb until a squirrel tore the cord in two. But I actually got one end with about 12 lights left to still work.
Might be a little overkill for the BWCA-- then the simple string lights are my favorite as they have replaced my normal luci lights.

Same here. My single string is all I need. The Luci and a headlamp are more than sufficient for either soloing or a group. Actually I find if I go during the summer months, I never use a lantern because it stays light so late, but I really appreciate the string for the amount of light it gives and a little bit of battery that it takes.

You could say I have a luci light fetish. I have two of the 18 foot lights and one of the newer 44 foot strings. They do put out a decent amount of light in white, the colored ones are not quite as bright. I really like both sets but they can be heavy. The first picture the string lights are too the right and the Xmas type light are the revel lights. On the family trips we have light going all the way back to the latrine. The 44 foot set only came in white and I think that is the one just to right of the hammock.

I bring two 40 foot strings of Luci Lights. The containers are about the same size regardless of number of lights. We really like them

but seriously guys. . . .pink? If I brought pink string lights my guys would tie me up in them, put me in my canoe and shove me off into the lake.

They are great! They add a good vibe to the camp.

They're great, plus you can actually charge something from it if you need to. Nice ambiance substitute if there's a fire ban and you can't have a fire.

We used them under the group tarp last year. The guys loved them. Allowed us to cook, serve and eat dinner after sunset.

I like the idea of the early poster about using a string to light the path to the privy as well.

Looks like a complete overkill for the BWCA which I would hate to see paddling by or looking at across the lake. The BWCA is not a carnival amusement park.
Leave no trace, also applies while there. No one wants to hear loud music blasting across the lake.
Sight and sounds are much to do with the BWCA experience. What's the limit on gadgets?

Agree 100%. Should be banned. Dark places

The question is when something is too much, with new technology who knows how far it could go? Some think it is a Chicken Litte attitude "The Sky is falling"> Is it. I rather see a campsite in the dark with a nice campfire, instead of Christmas lights. The question is what is just right and when too much.

Always nice to have a healthy discussion.

I have been looking at getting a set of these for a while now, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm a bit torn between the 18' and 44'.

18 feet of lights seems like plenty and I like the size and weight a lot better, but I also really like that the lights are detachable on the 44' mode and it's not like more light is worse. 18' might be enough for a ridgeline but the 44' could go around the perimeter of a tarp and reduce shadows.

Has anyone tried both? Does the 44' model provide enough benefits to justify the increased size and weight? It does cost $15 more too...

Thanks for the input everyone! It sounds like the white version offers better light output.

Just an FYI, I noticed Luci has a Valentine's day sale today, 35% off everything.

Perhaps some group can establish a BWCA Lumens Patrol, and hand out citations for anyone possessing and using a flashlight or headlamp in excess of 500 lumens.

Buy One Get One free for the 18' version on mpowerd.com.

Just a quick comparison between the one 40' and two 18':
Weight is roughly equal with the 40' being slightly heavier
Same number of LEDs
140 Lumens on the 40', 100 Lumens on the 18'
The 40' is 4 feet longer and can span larger gaps but having two 18' strings allows for versatility
7"x2.87" (110 cubic inches) vs two that are 5"x2" (39 cubic inches each 78 combined)
One 4000mAh battery vs two 2000mAh batteries, but the 40' claims to last longer
The 40' base is detachable, but the 18' base is not
$70 for the 40', $55 each for the 18' (BOGO sale right now)
