This larger beaver dam is at the other end of the short portage from the first photo. The portage is on the east side of the river and this photo is looking in a western direction.

There are a higher than average number of campgrounds on this lake and two of the portages into this lake would be considered very long.

P.S. My apologies, I'm missing a folder of photos on a hard drive and can't find other suitable pics.

Standing in the same spot as the second photo, here is a pic of the river flowing into this lake. Looking southeasterly...

The two longest portages combine for over 1,000 rods.

One of the guesses so far is close...less distance from lake to lake as the crow flies than the longest portage.
